Thanks to the creativity of an Abilene, Texas-area welder, a life-size metal moose looks out over Fair Road. Donnie Knauss crafted the moose out of flexible scrap metal. "So many people slow down to look at it, I'm like, 'Hon, you're going to cause an accident,'" said the welder's wife, Karey Knauss.

As a summer welding student, the Boy Scout from Shallowater, Texas, has spent his past few mornings learning a new skill to accompany the Scouts’ traditional ones such as wilderness survival. "It’s fun to do because you get to make cool stuff," he said.

Program teaches prison inmates welding skills for future careers
A program that began back in March at the San Luis Obispo (California) County Jail, is teaching inmates vocational skills. They are learning to become certified welders. Inmates from the Honor Farm participate in the 18-week welding program, while still in custody and under supervision.

Alfred State breaks ground for advanced manufacturing center

Shovels hittting the dirt during a groundbreaking ceremony recently on the Alfred State College Applied Technology Campus in Wellsville, New York, meant the start of additional educational experiences to come for students who are interested in pursuing degrees in manufacturing. College representatives, local government officials, state dignitary representatives and construction crew leaders broke ground to mark the spot for the college’s 16,500-square-foot Sustainable Advanced Manufacturing Center.
