The economic impact of 'Made in the USA'
Industry Edge
"Made in America" isn't just the name of a song anymore. Whether out of a sense of patriotism, a desire to help the American economy or the belief that U.S.-made products are of higher quality, consumers of everything from clothes to computers increasingly want to see a "Made in the USA" sticker on the items they buy. Last year, General Electric began making some of its water heaters and refrigerators at U.S. factories. Wal-Mart announced plans in April to buy an additional $50 billion of American-made products over the next decade, and Apple said it would begin building some of its computers in the United States this year. This trend presents both an opportunity and a challenge for the hardware industry.

Goodbye for good to GM Weld Tool Center after 70 years
General Motors Co. stopped production at its Grand Blanc Weld Tool Center July 1. The company announced in January its plans to shutter the facility, forcing all of the plant's 343 hourly and salaried workers into a premature retirement or a change in work environment. None of the employees were left without a job as a result of the closing, and most of the work that was done at the Weld Tool Center will be shifted to the Parma, Ohio, plant.

With Mexican auto manufacturing boom, new worries
The Washington Post
In the division of labor that has long governed North American auto manufacturing, the Big Three and other companies typically built their top moneymakers in the United States, using their Mexican plants to produce smaller, cheaper cars with lower profit margins. But that division is breaking down. As Mexico cranks out record numbers of vehicles and attracts billions in new investment, Mexican auto workers are increasingly able to match the skill and productivity of their U.S. counterparts — and at a fraction of the wages.

Shared high-tech production facilities may be the new face of American manufacturing
The Valley Advocate
Definitions abound for makerspaces and similar fab labs and hackerspaces. They vary from artists' shared work spaces to high-tech machining, metalworking and electronics labs. Some are clubs of programmers who build robotic devices by writing code and manipulating microcontrollers. Others, like the 40,000-square-foot nonprofit Artisan's Asylum in Somerville, Mass., rent stalls to entrepreneurial artisans and offer classes in everything from building bike frames to mold-making and kinetic sculpture.

Can manufacturing push past uncertainty?
The path to prosperity has been littered with economic obstacles in 2013, but economists expect growth to pick up soon and U.S. manufacturers to benefit from a changing energy picture. The slow return of jobs has generated considerable debate about what constitutes a U.S. manufacturing "renaissance." Chris Kuehl, managing director of Armada Corporate Intelligence, says industry will never again provide jobs for "the high school graduate who doesn't want to go on to college." But he said manufacturing has reversed 30 years of decline in its contribution to U.S. GDP and remains a world leader in producing sophisticated, high-value goods.

The search for the right welding mix
Welding applications have come a long way, thanks to advancements in welding technology and machinery in recent years, and a wider knowledge when it comes to ascertaining the right combination of gases for the right process. The most commonly used welding gases are carbon dioxide and argon, an inert gas, although oxygen is often used in either a two-part or three-part mix, in small percentages.

No, manufacturing jobs won't revive the economy
The promise of a U.S. manufacturing revival has gained strength and currency in policy circles, with many arguing it's a way to turn the economy around. But, for all the optimism and nostalgia for an America that once was, it's worth asking whether factory jobs are more likely to help workers rise to the middle class today — or leave them stranded among the working poor.
