GM or Ford: Who is winning the race to build the 'robot' car?
Fox News    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Are American automakers getting closer to building a robotic car? Ford and GM recently announced plans for semi-autonomous tech that looks promising. Both companies are working toward a similar goal. The idea being to let the car do more of the driving for you, but not necessarily take over completely. For example, as you are driving down the road, you'd click a button that lets you take your hands off the wheel and your foot off the accelerator to let the car do the work. The vehicle uses sensors to monitor lane markings and adjust vehicle speed automatically to match the flow of traffic. Ford's latest technology is called Traffic Jam Assist and the company says it could be on the road sometime between 2017-2025, while Cadillac's is known as Super Cruise and may debut by mid-decade, according to company insiders. Helium shortage affecting Washington state Tri-City businesses
Tri-City Herald    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
When Henry Kidwell went to buy a helium tri-mix for his welding business, he only could get two of the four bottles he wanted. Retailers such as Spokane, Wash.-based OXARC Inc. say they are rationing helium because of the worldwide shortage that began about a month ago. Demand for helium is beyond the amount available, said Joe Peterson with BLM's Federal Helium Program in Amarillo, Texas. Helium is not being produced overseas at the same rate it was a few years ago, so requests for U.S. helium have increased. More

Johnson: Give skilled trades equal footing
Midland Daily News    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Republican state Rep. Joel Johnson has introduced legislation that now is pending in the Michigan House of Representatives that "is extremely important to the future of our area," he writes. "It has been my opinion for some time that Michigan curriculum mandates focus entirely too much on four-year degree tracks as the only path possible for students. This ignores the fact that numerous students do just as well, if not better, pursuing their education through skilled trades colleges, tech colleges or other means of apprenticeship training. Unless the Michigan Legislature amends state curriculum mandates to allow for truly useful skilled trades programs, these students will continue to be left behind." More

AVTEC welding program promises jobs, strong wages
Alaska Journal of Commerce    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Mike Stevenson has been fascinated with how things work for his whole life. Even when young, the 19-year-old from Talkeetna, Alaska, would take things apart and put them back together. These days, however, he's more interested in fixing heavy equipment and big rigs. "Heavy equipment is fun," Stevenson said. The fun of the work — not to mention the job prospects — is part of what draws students from all over to the small city of Seward every year to be part of the welding program at AVTEC, Alaska's Institute of Technology. AVTEC has offered classes and certifications for pipe and steel welding for more than 40 years. Kent Berklund, head of AVTECs Applied Technologies Department, said the program's success lies in its results for the students. More

For Oregon couple Nic and Anna, the answer was to move half-way across the country and pursue a career in welding. "We feel that it's worth it to get into welding because it's a skill that you can't easily outsource and is required for the economy to grow," says Nic. The couple, who currently live in Portland, Ore., both have an associate's degree in general studies, but never completed their bachelor's degrees. According to Nic, with their degrees, the most they could hope for was getting an unskilled retail job. More
