Doug Lynn wanted to do something special for the South Central Developmental Services group home at Santa Fe Drive. His daughter, Emma Lynn, is one of the eight developmentally disabled individuals who resides at the group home. They decided the best way to achieve this would be a metal sculpture that would sit outside the entrance of the group home.

When welding instructor Oscar Rushton started South Aiken High School’s program five years ago, he charted out a number of lofty goals for the Thoroughbreds that included being among the best in the state and representing Aiken County and South Carolina nationally.
Rushton was clear from the outset that he and others would supply instruction and direction, but the students themselves would need to provide the drive and work ethic.

The College of Eastern Idaho and Premier Technology are partnering to train more welders.
Welding is a fast-growing field locally — Premier alone needs to hire 150 to 200 welders in the next two years to support its current contracts. CEI offers an associate of applied sciences welding degree, but the number of welders CEI can graduate is “a drop in the bucket compared to the needs in the region,” CEI said in a news release.

The Bremen High School District 228 Welding Works Program, part of District 228's Career Readiness Programming, delivered their highlights and accomplishments to the Bremen High School District 228 School Board of Education. Since its inception in 2016, the District 228 Welding Works Program has had three students present at the National Metal Working Conference in Chicago and has expanded its shop from three welders to eight welders and welding stations.

The summer welding class at the PJC-Sulphur Springs Center includes four young women from Sulphur Springs. While welding isn’t a traditional occupation for women, interest is growing and “these students are doing great,” according to Instructor John Plemons. They are, from left with Plemons looking on; KeaAron Cash, Nicky Cline, Emily Kuiper, and Hailey McKinney. All but Kuiper are in structural welding. Kuiper is in advanced welding. According to the American Welding Society, only about 5.8 percent of working welders are females. These students said they love it and are in it to stay.

While still in her teens, she picked up another skill not often associated with women. She learned welding. It came about by happenstance. Her dad had been laid off from work in their hometown of Rocky Mount, North Carolina, and decided to attend welding school on Saturdays.
“Eventually I started running rods,” she said. “Just messing with it.”
Gilliam is now 30 years old. She can still play the trumpet, but welding pays the bills. In fact, it has become more than a job.
