3-D printing could remake US manufacturing
USA Today    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
About 20 miles east of Pittsburgh, the former heart of the nation's steel industry, a small company called ExOne is churning out a new generation of stainless steel boat propellers, oil pump parts and door knobs. But there are no clanging hammers, wheezing presses or even computer-controlled milling machines. Instead, a dozen 3-D printers quietly stitch together industrial parts by meticulously spreading hundreds or thousands of layers of powdered metal onto a canvas until they form three-dimensional shapes. This minimalist factory exemplifies the latest chapter of the industrial revolution, one that could make U.S. manufacturing more competitive globally and could bring more jobs back to the United States. Starbucks Georgia factory jolts US manufacturing
The Huffington Post    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Starbucks has begun construction of its first U.S. soluble products plant, a factory in Augusta, Ga., that it said will be up and running by 2014. The facility will produce powder-coffee bases for Starbucks' Via instant coffee, blended Frappuccinos and bottled energy and coffee drinks. The plant will be Starbucks' fifth in the U.S. While most American manufacturers are now located overseas, Starbucks and a handful of companies are bucking the trend and rediscovering old industrial towns like Augusta, where they say skilled, high-tech labor is easier to find than it is in foreign countries. Ethan Robert, 31, a professional welder who lives near Augusta, believes he would be qualified for some of the jobs at the Starbucks factory and says he would consider applying to work there once it opens. Bloomberg    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Manufacturing in the New York region expanded in July at a faster pace than anticipated, signaling factories will keep contributing to growth. The Federal Reserve Bank of New York's general economic index rose to 7.4 from 2.3 in June. The median forecast of 51 economists surveyed by Bloomberg News called for an increase to 4.0. Readings greater than zero signal expansion in the so-called Empire State Index that covers New York, northern New Jersey and southern Connecticut. The last negative reading was in October. More

Florida, as rest of country, in search of women welders
First Coast News    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Many across the country and in Jacksonville, Fla., are struggling to find a job. But there's one sector of the economy that has huge demand for workers. Employers need welders. Of the students training to be welders at Tulsa Welding School in Jacksonville, 95 percent are men, 5 percent are women. Paula Miller couldn't find a job as a secretary or cosmetologist so she says she decided to dive into the male-dominated world of welding. "This was and is my opportunity to get back into the workforce," said Miller. She has good reason to be optimistic. A recent survey showed 200,000 welder jobs will be created over the next few years due to current welders retiring. More

For manufacturing jobs, workers brush up on math
Chicago Public Radio via KPCC    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Politicians have touted modern manufacturing as the solution for lifting the economy and providing good jobs. But today's manufacturing work requires strong math skills — not just adding and subtracting, but a good grasp of fractions, decimals and basic trigonometry. And job applicants who want to go into manufacturing often don't have what it takes, NPR reports. So colleges and nonprofits, especially throughout Illinois, are stepping in to bridge this skills gap by combining manufacturing training with basic reading and math. More

Experts: Flaw at Los Angeles light-rail junction poses derailment risk
Los Angeles Times    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Local transit officials have run into complications trying to fix a junction on the recently opened Expo light-rail line, where experts said a serious track flaw presented a higher risk of train derailments. Officials of the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority believed they had found a permanent solution to a rail alignment problem where the Expo Line and Blue Line merge at Washington Boulevard and Flower Street just south of downtown Los Angeles. However, the extra metal that was welded to a portion of track to keep trains moving smoothly as the Blue Line makes a 90-degree turn has had to be redone several times because of frequent wear, Metro officials say.
