Energy, manufacturing found to fuel US cities' economic growth
Reuters
Share

Cities will be leading contributors to U.S. economic expansion during the next year, and much of their growth will depend on energy and manufacturing, according to a study recently released by the U.S. Conference of Mayors. "The timing and pace of recovery will be varied across the states and metropolitan areas," found the study, conducted by independent firm IHS Global Insight. "Metro areas that didn't suffer and those whose economies are rooted in quickly growing or rebounding industries will likely recover before those with greater exposure to the acute economic turmoil."

Ohio State University

Beyond the midway thrills and the ever-present butter sculpture, this year's Ohio State Fair will have a new attraction — one designed to have a more lasting impression. The Careers in Welding Trailer contains virtual simulators and other interactive exhibits designed to inspire fairgoers — young and old — about welding as a potential career. The trailer's visit to the state fair is sponsored by the American Welding Society, Lincoln Electric and the 4-H Youth Development program of Ohio State University Extension. It made its debut at FABTECH in Chicago in November 2011 and has traveled throughout the U.S. since.

Can the US handle a manufacturing comeback?

For years, U.S. manufacturers worried about business being sent overseas. Now, as signs point to a resurgence of American-made goods, a new fear is emerging: that there won't be enough skilled workers to keep up with demand. According to an April survey of 259 manufacturers by MFG.com, an online directory that connects businesses with domestic manufacturers, 40 percent of respondents said they'd gotten business back this year that had been sent abroad.

Railroads back in style for freight transportation
IndustryWeek
Share

In this highly digitized world of same-day deliveries, multichannel global distribution networks and cargo deliveries to outer space, it's somewhat ironic that the best transportation option for manufacturers in 2012 is to adopt a strategy that dates back to the '50s — the 1850s. Out of all the transportation modes that serve the manufacturing industry, the mode that looks most attractive right now is rail. If you've been tracking the steady rise in rail-freight pricing, this won't be much of a surprise to you. Over the past year, rail-freight transportation rose by 15.3 percent, which is only good news if you consider that in 2010 it rose by 21.8 percent.

Fairfield welder ready to burn rubber on Sonoma drag strip
The Reporter

Fairfield, Calif.'s Bruce Lippstreu is a welder, but his heart has been in drag racing for a long, long time. "I've only been back in the racing the last five years, but I've basically been involved in racing my whole life," said the 56-year-old owner of Lippstreu Welding Service. It goes back "45-plus years I guess," Lippstreu said, adding "I helped build the track at Sears Point." In the 1970s and early '80s he was behind the wheel, "and then I gave it up. So I began welding for a lot of the pro teams." A few years back, though, encouraged by friends, he started racing again.

Welding inspection can reduce costs by detecting discontinuities in the early stages of manufacturing, reducing the cost of rework and extending the life of components by detecting flaws. Non-destructive testing methods can identify cracking, porosity, incomplete penetration, misalignment, inclusions, lack of fusion and similar conditions, which can compromise weld strength. MORE

ND regulator: Natural gas production will rise
The Associated Press via Bloomberg Businessweek
Share

Preliminary study results say North Dakota's natural gas production likely will rise as future oil output falls. Natural gas is a byproduct of oil production. North Dakota Department of Natural Resources director Lynn Helms says normally, when a well's oil output starts going down, its natural gas production also declines. North Dakota's natural gas also contains other fuels, like ethane, which is used to make welding gas, and butane, which is used to make petrochemicals.

Texas welder crafts lion transport cages for zoo

Gene's Machine employee Louis Berger has worked on many projects during his 50-year career as a welder. He has worked on vessels, various types of oil field equipment and even a fluid swivel that helped keep transportation going in the Philippines. But it was not until recently that he worked on his first lion crates. "They turned out nice," said Berger, as he stood next to the gigantic lion crates he had spent countless hours welding over the last two months. "I just hope they hold everything in them." Gene's Machine of Victoria, one of the largest fabrication companies in South Texas, donated its labor and equipment to make four transport crates for The Texas Zoo's two Barbary lions and two Bengal tigers.

Montana artist, son weld head onto metal bear sculpture

Don't you wonder what Bill Ohrmann's welded steel animals do at night? Right there alongside Montana Highway 1, in the moonlight, in the yard outside the artist's museum, gallery and ranch house? Do the giant woolly mammoth and polar bear ever jitterbug in the driveway? Do the buffalo and the endearing donkey made all of scrap metal tiptoe to the shop to see what ol' Bill's got cooking now? They look like they could, and Ohrmann, now 93 and as mischievous as ever, probably will tell you they do. That's why, in the chest cavity of the Kodiak bear-to-be that lies in the shop, John Ohrmann already has welded his father's quirky signature: a heart made of sheet metal and painted valentine red.

The end of Chinese manufacturing and rebirth of US industry
Forbes
Share

There is great concern about China's real estate and infrastructure bubbles. But these are just short-term challenges that China may be able to spend its way out of. The real threat to China's economy is bigger and longer term: its manufacturing bubble. By offering subsidies, cheap labor, and lax regulations and rigging its currency, China was able to seduce American companies to relocate their manufacturing operations there. But rising labor costs, concerns over government-sponsored I.P. theft, and production time lags already are causing companies such as Dow Chemical, Caterpillar, GE and Ford to start moving some manufacturing back to the U.S. from China.

Welders: Manufacturing's hottest commodity
Houston Business Journal

It's a good time to be a welder. According to a recent report from Sugar Land, Texas-based Industrial Info Resources, an estimated 8,900 industrial projects in North America are looking for welders. In Houston, where oil and gas industrial projects are booming, the demand is greater than ever before. In fact, in a recent print story in the Houston Business Journal about Lone Star Energy Fabrication, an oil rig fabricator, the company said that it is having such difficulties hiring the welders it needs for ongoing projects that it has even looked to foreign countries, such as Mexico.

She recently joined middle school girls from across the metropolitan area at the University of Portland for the Oregon Tradeswomen's annual Building Girls Summer Camp. "I like trying new things a lot," she said. "And it's been great." Forty middle school girls participated in the $25-a-week camp.
