IIW Annual Assembly to be hosted by AWS, EWI and WRC

The American Welding Society, Edison Welding Institute, and Welding Research Council will host the annual assembly of the International Institute of Welding — or IIW — July 2012, when the event returns to the US for the first time in more than a decade. An international conference on "Welding for Repair and Life Extension of Plants and Infrastructure" will accompany the assembly. The IIW yearly meeting will be attended by welding industry leaders from more than 50 countries. More

Air Liquide, the world leader in industrial gases, posted a strong rise in first half profits, despite Japan's earthquake and unrest in the Middle East, as it benefited from buoyant emerging markets. Air Liquide, which makes oxygen for the steel sector, argon for welding, nitrogen for chip makers or hydrogen for refineries, said that assuming normal economic conditions, it would generate steady net profit growth this year. Lincoln Electric, headquartered in Cleveland, Ohio, announced the acquisition of Techalloy, a privately held company based in Baltimore, Md. Techalloy is a manufacturer of stainless steel and nickel alloy welding consumables. Lincoln Electric purchased Techalloy's welding operation assets as well as assets of Central Wire Industries, parent company of Techalloy. More

The Wyoming Medium Correctional Institution graduated the inaugural class of the Vocational Welding Program that utilizes the Wyoming Department of Corrections mobile welding lab. A total of 7 inmates, all from WMCI, graduated with a certification in plate welding from Eastern Wyoming College. The certification provides credentials for the students to assist in pursuing a job upon release. The welding program is the same curriculum that students receive at the EWC, but it is taught in the mobile welding lab at WMCI. More

US bidder gears up for Charter but shareholders want Melrose

Lincoln, the Cleveland, Ohio-based company valued at $3 billion, or £1.83 billion, is interested in Charter's troubled ESAB welding wing, thought to be worth up to £1 billion. However, the 112-year-old American company would need to find a partner to buy Charter's well-regarded industrial fan business Howden, which is valued at up to £800 million. A consortium could bid as high as 875p-a-share in cash, which would top the rejected 840p-a-share indicative proposal from Melrose. More

Stinger Welding gets $17 million for new Libby, Mont., plant

Stinger Welding will get $17 million to complete its new fabrication plant in Libby, Mont., the Montana Community Development Corporation said. The announcement of the cash infusion and the 100 plus jobs it will create was welcome news for the Libby community, which has been plagued by double digit unemployment in recent months and still struggles with the aftermath of asbestos disease from the former W.R. Grace & Company vermiculite mine. More

OEM Fabricators is expanding its' Woodville. Wisc., facilities, adding capital equipment, and expects to hire 50 new team members in the coming year. OEM is also reconfiguring its' Neillsville, Wisc., facility, adding machinery and expects to add 70 new team members over the next two years.
