Tesla Inc said recently it would raise about $1.5 billion through its first-ever offering of junk bonds as the U.S. luxury electric car maker seeks fresh sources of cash to ramp up production of its new Model 3 sedan.
The move to issue junk bonds – lower-quality investments that offer higher yields – represents a bet by Tesla Chief Executive Elon Musk that bond investors will be as hungry as stock investors to back the company on expectations that its Model 3 will be a hit.

Toyota Motor Corp said on Friday it planned to take a 5 percent share of smaller Japanese rival Mazda Motor Corp, as part of an alliance that will see the two build a $1.6 billion U.S. assembly plant and work together on electric vehicles.
The plant was a surprise for investors at a time of cooling U.S. sales, but marked good news for U.S. President Donald Trump who came to office on the back of promises to bring back manufacturing and jobs for U.S. workers. He commented on Twitter that it was a “great investment in American manufacturing.”

There’s trouble on the horizon for U.S. manufacturing. According to a 2015 Deloitte study, 3.5 million manufacturing jobs will need to be filled in the next decade. That should be great news, but a lack of appropriately skilled workers means that 2 million of those jobs could remain unfulfilled.
There have been plenty of proposals for strengthening U.S. manufacturing — some point to the importance of improving American manufacturing technology, while others argue that those technological gains won’t matter without a skilled workforce.

Dressed in his scouting uniform, 15-year-old Eagle Scout Simon Banzhaf arrived at T.K. Martin Center in Starkville, Mississippi, Aug. 9 after school to assemble the center's platform swing with its new stand — a proud moment for him and his father George, as the two of them had made the stand themselves to help out the center. It was the final step in a long process for the Troop 45 member and sophomore at Starkville Academy, whose first thought when deciding what to do for his Eagle Scout project was to work with T.K. Martin, a Mississippi State University-based center that assists special needs individuals. One of the center's programs is a preschool for children with disabilities — one of those children being a family friend of the Banzhafs.

The truth is that bringing manufacturing prowess jobs back to the United States is not as easy as signing an executive order. When we lost those jobs, primarily to Asian countries, we lost our expertise in the process. It didn’t happen overnight. By allowing extensive outsourcing of particular products — specifically electronics — over a prolonged period of time, we managed to completely outsource our knowledge of how many of these manufacturing systems operate.

“I need to be safe” should be the first thing in a technician and shop’s mind regarding welding, and it’s the business owner’s responsibility to keep employees safe with the relevant personal protection equipment, collision repair industry leaders said in the final part of a SCRS MIG/MAG educational video series.
One place where a technician (or presumably, a shop) might cheap out at their own peril is the welding mask itself, I-CAR welding instructor and Society of Collision Repair Specialists Educational Committee Co-Chairman Toby Chess said in the film.

When it comes to low-volume manufacturing of metal parts, 3-D metal printing is set to propel the market forward and disrupt the status quo. There is a lot of buzz around the technology, and rightfully so. However, it has limitations that cannot be overlooked.
It is also obvious, especially to those on the on the production side of the business, that there is a learning curve that will have to be overcome before 3-D metal printing can reach its full potential. However, first it’s important that engineers have a keen understanding of the process before they design for it.
