American Welding Society Acquires World Engineering Xchange
The American Welding Society (AWS) has acquired World Engineering Xchange (WEX), the former sales and fulfillment partner for the publications of the American Welding Society. The publication sales division will now be known as the AWS Technical Standards Sales department and will continue to operate the AWS Bookstore. They will now be housed at AWS’s global headquarters in Miami, Fla.

New Edition of AWS D1.1 Structural Welding Code — Steel Now Available
A revised edition of the American Welding Society’s AWS D1.1/D1.1M,Structural Welding Code — Steel, has been published. The standard known as D1.1/D1.1M:2015 supersedes the 2010 edition. The new D1.1/D1.1M spells out the requirements for design, procedures, qualifications, fabrication, inspection and repair of steel structures made of tubes, plate and structural shapes that are subject to either static or cyclic loading.

The Technology Exchange on Coordination of U.S. Standards for Additive Manufacturing, which is co-hosted by America Makes and the Center for Innovative Materials Processing through Direct Digital Deposition (CIMP-3D) at Penn State, will take place on October 7th and 8th at University Park, PA. The event is co-sponsored by ASTM International, SAE International, ASME, AWS, and SME. The objective of the Technology Exchange is to initiate dialogue for development and coordination of additive manufacturing (AM) standards.

Technical, specialized programs' enrollment boom at Michigan college
Traverse City Record-Eagle
Specialized technical programs at Northwestern Michigan College continue to boom in contrast to the institution's overall declining enrollment. The college's maritime, aviation and nursing programs are all full this fall, with 60, 40 and 49 students, respectively, college officials said. Enrollment totals were also strong in the college's Great Lakes Water Institute — up 43 percent from fall 2014 — and engineering technology offerings where enrollment is up 25 percent from last year.

Aluminum supplier to open Goodyear, Arizona, manufacturing plant

Basic Metals Inc., an independently owned aluminum service center and supplier, will open a manufacturing and distribution center in Goodyear, Arizona, in September. The Wisconsin-based company’s purchased an industrial building at 15635 W. Illini St., near Highway 85 and Estrella Parkway, in July. Specializing in aluminum sheet, coil and circles, Basic Metals supplies aluminum to manufacturers, metal fabricators and metal spinners.

Kennedy Fabricating Inc. expands partnership with Splendora (Texas) ISD

Splendora, Texas-based business Kennedy Fabricating Inc. recently completed its second year of working with Splendora High School in a partnership that allows the students in the district’s welding program to get hands-on experience, as well as the chance to gain a certification in the process. Now, the company is working to expand that partnership by providing an XMT-350 welding machine to the district, allowing the students in the welding program to conduct work on a more dynamic machine.

Lincoln Electric co-funds Ohio State University professorship

With a $1 million donation, Lincoln Electric has co-funded the first endowed professorship in welding engineering at Ohio State University. Lincoln Electric also donated or consigned nearly $420,000 worth of welding equipment and technology for use by Ohio State students and faculty. As part of the university’s Department of Materials Science and Engineering, the professorship will recruit a new faculty member for the 2015-2016 academic year.

Welding camp a hit in Thunder Bay, Ontario

Kierra Kielczwski was a bit hesitant when her mother first suggested she try the Mind Over Metal Summer Welding Camp at Confederation College. But after four days in the weeklong program, the 13-year-old can see welding as a possible career path. "I love it," said Kierra, who is heading into Grade 8 this September at Algonquin Avenue Public School. The camp is sponsored by the Canadian Welding Association and has 10 students learning the different aspects of the trade.
