New technologies offer hope for American manufacturing
IndustryWeek    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Although the state of American manufacturing has been grim for the past decade, the "reshoring" trend and new technologies are making the outlook for the future of American manufacturing look brighter than it now appears. In the past few years, the key factors for returning manufacturing to America have been quality problems, rising labor costs, intellectual property theft, rising shipping costs, long lead times for product delivery from Asia, and the cost of inventory for the larger lots you have to buy from Asia to get the cheaper prices. Welding emerging as the new hot job
WJAR-TV    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Whether you're a teenager looking for a career or a mid-lifer whose career has dried up, there are plenty of welding jobs available. It's just one of many skilled labor jobs, like sheet metal workers, electricians and others, that many companies can't fill. Many now in those jobs are middle-aged and approaching retirement and vacancies can't be filled quickly enough. "Get a skill because if you go to college and it doesn't work out, you have something to fall back on and college isn't for everybody," welding instructor Eden Parks says. She turned to welding about five years ago when her previous career didn't pan out. Parks is one of the instructors as Georgia Trade School, a new welding school opening in Kennesaw, Ga. More

Manufacturing companies thrive in Ohio suburbs
WKYC-TV    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
In two years, productivity has quadrupled for one local manufacturer. Employment has increased five times. Ambaflex makes spiral conveyors. The towering cylinders are used in plants throughout North America. "Anywhere there are conveyer lines that need to be connected while saving space," says plant manager David Spencer. The Holland-based company chose Canton, Ohio, as its first production center in North America in the fall of 2010. When Spencer helped open the facility, Ambaflex had just three employees, constructing one spiral conveyer per week. Today, the company has 17 employees and puts out 38 spiral conveyers a month. North Carolina community college trains techs today for tomorrow's jobs
Mebane Enterprise    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Cheyenne Edwards, 22, of Mebane, N.C., plans to graduate from Alamance Community College in 2014. She says she has only five courses left with welding as her major. "I like it; it's fun," says the 2007 graduate of Cedar Ridge High School, who went to Durham Tech and "goofed off." She says, "I didn't know what I wanted to do." Edward Williams, public information and marketing director of Alamance Community College, says that 425,000 welding jobs will be available when Edwards graduates in 2014 because welding was not "cool" in the 1980's and 1990's. As retirees age out, the graduates in today's market with "real good" skills will have good jobs with companies. More

Real-life 'Rosie the Riveter' likes watching metal melt
AWS Blog    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Next to crab fishing and being a professional cowboy, welding has to be one of the manliest jobs on the planet. Just throw in equal parts metal, fire, and heavy-duty masks and you have a job that would attract most men. And even a few tough women. Melissa Hall, 22, is one of those tough women. She first learned how to weld when she was just 15, and ever since, it has taken over her life. "When I was in junior high, we learned to solder," she said. For her, it was the pure, raw simplicity of it that attracted her. "I thought it was the coolest thing being able to watch metal melt!" Once she was in high school, Melissa says she decided to take her chances on a welding course that was being offered. "I fell in love instantly," she said. More

Manufacturing in China slows further
The New York Times    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The Chinese economy, it seems, is stuck in a nasty rut. A closely watched barometer of China's economic performance — a monthly survey that measures the conditions in the giant manufacturing sector — sharply slumped in August, offering one of the earliest glimpses of how the month has been progressing. The prognosis, judging by a preliminary reading of the survey recently published, was poor. The purchasing managers' index, released by HSBC, sagged to 47.8 from 49.3 in July, the lowest level since late last year. More

US, European Welding Standards: Conference of GSI/AWS set for October
AWS    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The American Welding Society has partnered with Germany's GSI to deliver a unique conference in Munich on Oct. 22-23 where U.S. and European welding standards on numerous topics will be presented, compared, and discussed. With increased globalization and complexity of supply chains, more and more companies in Europe and in North America have realized the need to be knowledgeable about multiple national and international fabrication codes and standards. This conference will benefit engineers, inspectors, supervisors, and quality control personnel who are familiar with one set of standards but need to know more about the other set of standards. The conference will be conducted in English. A tour of Munich will be organized the day before the conference begins. More

Looming defense cuts put manufacturers on hold
Hartford Business Journal    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
As the federal government moves to slice $492 billion from the U.S. Department of Defense budget over 10 years, Connecticut's manufacturers are reluctant to hire employees or upgrade facilities for defense contracts. Wisconsin teacher has bold idea about manufacturing education
Modern Machine Shop    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Craig Cegielski, a high school teacher in Strum, Wis., leads one of the most innovative manufacturing education programs in the country. His idea for how to improve the school's manufacturing program was ingeniously simple: Make it a business. Today, the Eleva-Strum High School junior- and senior-level machining and welding technology program has become "Cardinal Manufacturing," a job shop run by students. Instead of make-work projects, the students spend their time doing real commercial work for paying customers, and facing real-world quality and delivery requirements. More

Texas aerospace scientist learns welding for future space missions
The Bay Area Citizen    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Amber Gell of Clear Lake, Texas, has visions of one day seeing humans on Mars, and she's not too far off if recent news of the Curiosity rover is any measure of success. The aerospace scientist is dedicating research time at NASA toward working on the technology to get there, starting with welding. She already holds two bachelor's degrees in aerospace engineering and aerospace studies, a master's degree in physiology and human performance, and a graduate certificate in space systems engineering. With all the technical aspects covered, she's also working on a Master of Business Administration to figure out how much all of her visions will cost. Yet, at the same time, Gell recognizes she needs to know how it will all come, or weld, together — literally. And that's why she's going for an associate degree in welding at San Jacinto College, right up the road from her job at NASA — Johnson Space Center near Houston. More
