Father-daughter duo teaches welding at California's Cuesta College
A family who welds together stays together. At least that holds true for a father-daughter duo at Cuesta College. Welding instructor Mike Fontes and his daughter, Kory, both teach at the community college. They're helping grow the program there, and Kory is shattering stereotypes that most welders are men. Kory's love for welding started at Cal Poly, where she took a class while studying agriculture education.

18th Annual Aluminum Conference
Sept. 22-24, 2015
Omni Hotel
San Diego, CA

A distinguished panel of aluminum-industry experts will survey the state of the art in aluminum welding technology and practice. The 18th Aluminum Welding Conference will also provide several opportunities for you to network informally with speakers and other participants, and to visit an exhibition showcasing products and services available to the aluminum welding industry. Aluminum lends itself to a wide variety of industrial applications because of its light weight, high strength-to-weight ratio, corrosion resistance, and other attributes. However, because its chemical and physical properties are different from those of steel, welding of aluminum requires special processes, techniques, and expertise.

Hartford Courant
Goodwin College's new 27,000-square foot business and manufacturing center is one way that the school adapts to what is needed in Connecticut. President Mark Scheinberg said the college takes pride in learning what manufacturers and employers are looking for, and tries to create programs to meet those needs. He added that the idea for the facility and its programs came from a conversation with U.S. Rep. John Larson, who was trying to create a training program for manufacturers because Connecticut's businesses were in need of workers with specific skills.

The Welding Certificate program at Barton Community College started this fall, and on Aug. 26 the BCC Board of Trustees approved the purchase of 10 complete multiprocess welding machines for the lab. Because this purchase was over $50,000, the administration sought bids and brought them before the board, which approved the low bid of $57,759.58 from Scott’s Welding in Great Bend, Kansas.
