It adds that momentum on retraining "has been building" since President Donald Trump in July signed an executive order to explore ways to encourage investment in job-oriented training programs. The newspaper notes that Lincoln Electric Holdings Inc. recently opened a 130,000-square-foot training center in Cleveland as part of a $30 million initiative to train new welders and expand the skills of existing ones.

Blinn College's welding program is expanding its services to accommodate their growth. This year, Blinn enrolled over 100 students in their welding program, which is a far cry from the first class enrollment of just 23 students in January 2016. Just two years ago, Blinn Welding only had enough spots for eight booths. Now, they are expanding to a bigger campus and teaching 130 students the skilled trade. "Welders have been decreasing throughout the country, so the demand has been going up, and there's good money to be made in it. There's a lot of work available," said Blinn College student Adam Dormeier.

According to the Bureau of Labor statistics, Pennsylvania is one of the top five states for welder employment, which is why Bethlehem Vo-Tech just installed a new $1.3 million welding lab. "The old lab had 16 welding booths. The new one allows us 20 work stations with a maximum — we can increase it up to 23 work stations," said Adam Lazarchak, executive director of Bethlehem Area Vo-Tech. They also placed an emphasis on non-traditional student enrollment with the design.

She wanted to be a welder, like some of her family members. Huggett completed the 18-month program last year with a 4.0 grade-point average.
