Janet De La Cruz doesn't think it should be a big deal. "I'm a welder. I can weld. That's all that should matter," De La Cruz said. But De La Cruz is making history with her welding. Just 18 years old, De La Cruz became Lee County, Florida's first female student to receive an American Welding Society certification. She is now working full-time at Direct Industrial Products and Machining in Labelle, succeeding in a field that is approximately 95 percent male, according to U.S. Department of Labor statistics

The welding program at Patrick Henry Community College in Martinsville, Virginia, looks a little different this semester – not because of the building, the course structure or even the students. After devoting 38 years of service to Patrick Henry Community College’s welding classes, recent retiree Dwight Bower is now spending time with his grandchildren and riding his motorcycle.
When Bower was 25 and fresh out of the military, he worked as a diesel mechanic in a Nashville garage. Nearly 40 years later, Bower is well-recognized and well-respected among welders throughout the southeast region.

As automakers have reduced the weight of their vehicles, they’ve introduced new materials, stepping up the use of high-strength steels, aluminum and magnesium. They’ve found new ways to join parts made with different materials together. Now comes the hard part, says a new report from Advanced Manufacturing — continuing the momentum, going deeper into vehicles and components to find weight savings. The industry, while doing all that, has to balance safety and customer demand for more vehicle features.

Krista Costello flips the mask down and sparks fly as she expertly welds two horseshoes together. Moments later, she places the finished work on the floor and jams a heel into the open end. "There you go," she says. "A boot cleaner." Costello has been welding things together for many years now, but took the long route toward making art that is both beautiful and useful. "I hated school; I hated sitting in the classroom," says Costello. "Especially since I could be out doing something."

It’s been suggested that American manufacturing is dying, but who’s to blame?
The most obvious culprits are those bloodthirsty millennials, whose victims range from chain restaurants like Buffalo Wild Wings and Applebee’s to movies to America itself. Indeed, the only thing they seem to be responsible for creating are listicles of the things they’re supposedly killing.

Your public school education exists, in large part, thanks to the Second Industrial Revolution. When the revolution took hold of America in the 1870s, 30 years after the end of the first, half of the U.S. population still spent their days toiling in fields. Education was typically voluntary, assuming the family was wealthy enough to afford tutors or school fees, and usually reserved for boys. With the development of commercial fertilizer and the internal combustion engine, productivity exploded while the number of farmers dropped to less than two percent of the population. It lessened the demand for child labor which in turn led to increased support for compulsory education for both sexes.
