Pipefitters, welders see career-prospect spark
Houston Chronicle
Many multibillion-dollar projects are under way around Texas, which is good news for pipefitters and welders who have the skills and experience that employers want. "For pipefitters, employers look to see if the applicant is versatile in reading basic blueprints and ISO drawings and understanding all implements of blueprint reading. Also, if he/she is familiar or had previous experience with different welding codes such as API, ASME and AWS," said Grant Peltier, chairman, American Welding Society Houston Section, and sales consultant key accounts at CWI, Praxair Distribution Inc. "The employee must be able to use standard and/or metric rule to measure."

Welding a profession in need of workers
Workers interested in a job that could take them from underwater to high up in skyscrapers or on the ground in the race car industry are being encouraged to consider seeking careers as welders. The American Welding Society is hoping to spark an interest in developing metal fabrication skills as the profession faces a shortage of 374,000 workers nationwide by 2024, said Daniel Stopnick, a work force development specialist who travels with the group's educational trailer. The 53-foot long exhibit is brought to events around the country, including the Farm Progress Show earlier this month in Decatur, Illinois.
