Report on skills gap in manufacturing released

American manufacturing companies cannot fill as many as 600,000 skilled positions — even as unemployment numbers hover at historic levels — according to a new survey from Deloitte and The Manufacturing Institute. The survey, "Boiling Point? The skills gap in U.S. manufacturing," polled a nationally representative sample of 1,123 executives at manufacturing companies recently and revealed that 5 percent of current manufacturing jobs are unfilled due to a lack of qualified candidates. Titan Trailers to open new plant, welding school in Ontario

Aluminum trailer manufacturer Titan Trailers has announced plans to build a new sub-assembly plant in Tillsonburg, Ont.The company, best known for its lightweight, extruded aluminum smoothside trailer bodies, is headquartered in Delhi, Ont. where it operates a 32,000 square-foot facility housing its trailer finishing and engineering operations. Company officials say the new facility in nearby Tillsonburg offers 60,000 square-feet of multi-purpose manufacturing space that's well suited to the trailer manufacturer's requirements. More

Dearth of skilled workers hurting U.S. manufacturing organizations

U.S. manufacturers are failing to fill thousands of vacant jobs, surprising when 14 million people are searching for work. Technology giant Siemens Corp., the U.S. arm of Germany's Siemens AG , has more than 3,000 jobs open nationwide. More than half require science, technology, engineering and math-related skills. Other companies report job vacancies that range from six to 200, with some positions open for at least nine months. More

Dana wins award for lightweight aluminum driveshaft

Dana has received a Frost & Sullivan technical innovation award for its Spicer Diamond Series Driveshaft, which uses a unique welding process to join an aluminum tube to steel u-joints, reducing weight by up to 100 pounds, the company announced. In an interview with Truck News at the American Trucking Associations Management Conference and Exhibition, Santiago Salazar, senior director, global product planning, said the new aluminum driveshaft will also be more resistant to corrosion than its steel counterparts. Builder proud, relieved floodgates held, protected two Pennsylvania cities

Bob Non's anxiety rose with the swollen Susquehanna River as it exerted immense force on floodgates protecting Wilkes-Barre and Kingston in Pennsylvania. Mr. Non's company, Pleasant Mount Welding Inc., built the portable barriers for the opposite ends of the Market Street Bridge, linking levees holding back the deluge. "It was very scary," Mr. Non, 49, of Crystal Lake, recalled of the flood's crest near the tops of the 12-foot floodgates. The floodgates held, and the river receded. More

Manufacturing Output Up 4 percent in September

After having gained 0.3 percent in August, manufacturing output moved up 0.4 percent, the Federal Reserve has announced. Industrial production increased 0.2 percent in September after having been unchanged in August. For the third quarter as a whole, industrial production rose at an annual rate of 5.1 percent. More

The national unemployment rate has ranged between 9-10 percent for nearly three years, representing 14-15 million workers and another 8-9 million workers that are considered underemployed. The unemployment rate for the manufacturing industry jumped from 8.3 percent in December 2008 to a high of 13 percent in January 2010, but has ranged from a high of 9.9 percent in January 2011 to a low of 8.9 percent in August. The Gases and Welding Distributors Association (GAWDA) has donated more than $200,000 to two New York City charities, putting the non-profit organization over the $1 million mark in charitable contributions through its GAWDA Gives Back campaign. Over the past 12 years, GAWDA Gives Back has donated $1,177,803 to help charities in the host cities of their annual convention. This year, New York City is hosting the convention and GAWDA has selected the FDNY Fire Family Transport Foundation and the Pencil Fellows Program as the recipients of their members’ monetary contributions.
