U.S. manufacturers had a strong start to the fourth quarter and are looking forward to the end of the presidential election, according to Markit Economics' preliminary report on the sector for October.
The flash purchasing manager's index (PMI) rose to 53.2, Markit said on Oct. 24. The index is based on a survey of manufacturers, and the "flash" reading is based on 85 to 90 percent of all responses collected every month.

Welded and melded together are two Butte High disciplines that teach real-world math and practical hands-on skills. Senior Caleb Hash is one of 30 students who learned how to create a welded project good enough for selling — original fire pits. "I really like the welding part of it," said Hash, aiming to study the trade after graduation. "The math project is good because it teaches the kids how to make something and put it to real life, which is really nice. You can figure out the angles and how to cut it."

The everything's-OK line about U.S. manufacturing goes something like this: Yes, lots of manufacturing jobs (7.3 million, to be precise-ish) have been lost since employment in the sector peaked in 1978, but real manufacturing output is at an all-time high.

Every two years, the International Association of Bridge, Structural, Ornamental and Reinforcing Ironworkers Union (Ironworkers International) hosts a National Apprentice Competition. The contest, first held in Pittsburgh in 1996, consists of eight different competitions: a written test, instrument layout, welding, burning, knot tying, rod tying, ornamental and the column climb.
"It’s an opportunity for the local unions to have a friendly competition for their apprentice members and determine who is the top three," says Ed Abbott, general organizer, Ironworkers International.

Welding things together is an apt metaphor for what Nick Helstad does.
As president/estimator at Nick’s Welding & Fabricating, Inc., it’s also precisely what he does on a daily basis: Joining together various pieces to make an overall whole.
If he’s seen his business grow beyond his wildest expectations, it’s in part because of his drive to succeed. Pride is part of what motivates Helstad, as well as the desire to do a little better as each year passes. His principles are also important to him.
