Manufacturing, construction and consumer confidence show gains
Los Angeles Times    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Key private indexes of manufacturing and consumer confidence edged up in October, while the government reported an increase in construction spending in September as economic data released indicated moderate economic growth. All three readings were in line with analyst expectations, and came as new private and government data on unemployment pointed toward modest employment gains last month. U.S. factories continued to power up last month after a summer contraction, according to the Institute of Supply Management. The group's purchasing manager's index increased to 51.7, up 0.2 percentage points from September's reading. More

Dreamliner savings meet cabin cool as United's 787 debuts
Bloomberg    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
United Continental Holdings Inc. is counting on Boeing Co.'s 787 Dreamliner to deliver fuel savings and in-flight cool as the world's largest carrier becomes the first in the U.S. to fly the composite-plastic jet. "If you want to be the world's leading airline, then you need the world's leading airplane, and we have that," Chief Executive Officer Jeff Smisek told passengers and employees in Houston before United's 787 debuted with a flight to Chicago. The Dreamliner has attracted notice for production delays as well as jet-lag-reducing creature comforts. The plane looms large in Chicago-based United's efforts to boost a benchmark revenue gauge and improve operations marred by integration woes from the 2010 merger that created the airline. More

Hot-plate welding offers high-speed advantages
Assembly Magazine    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Hot-plate welding can produce strong, leak-tight plastic assemblies with complex geometries. It is a robust, viable and technically sound joining process that is used to assemble batteries, fuel tanks, fluid reservoirs, taillight lenses and other applications where strong seals are crucial. Traditionally, hot-plate welding offered limited process control, minimal data acquisition capabilities and slow cycle times. But, that's not the case anymore. Today's welders allow engineers to precisely control the motion of the platen, the temperature of the heating surfaces and the force applied to parts. More

Welding inspection can reduce costs by detecting discontinuities in the early stages of manufacturing, reducing the cost of rework and extending the life of components by detecting flaws. Non-destructive testing methods can identify cracking, porosity, incomplete penetration, misalignment, inclusions, lack of fusion and similar conditions, which can compromise weld strength. MORE

Men of steel forge unique welded works in Lewisville, N.C.
Winston-Salem Journal    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
It's a small fire, really, but it makes the coal glow red hot and turns a bar of steel bright orange — warm enough to shape, twist and bend. Sparks fly if it gets too hot. Blacksmiths Frank Naples and Tim Crumley of A&M Welding, which is named for Naples' daughters Anna and Mia, work in Naples' shop in the woods behind his Lewisville, N.C., home. Crumley heats a piece of steel, then takes it to the anvil, picks up his hammer, and in minutes has formed a Colonial 12-sided ball — a traditional circular design often used on the end of a railing, post or handle. Their tools are simple: a hammer and a 340-pound anvil circa 1860 from England. A foot-pedaled power hammer built in 1947 speeds up their work. The two men together work on industrial projects, but it's clear that the art of steel is their passion. More

Welding is the new hot course on campus
The Denver Post    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
When Melody Fels first saw the twisted metal, sparks and gas flames, she knew she had found her new home. "I walked into the welding shop, and I thought, 'Oh, how fun. This is where I belong,' " said Fels, 18, one of 10 female students immersing themselves in the expanding field of welding at the Fort Collins, Colo., branch of Front Range Community College. Welding is one of the fastest-growing fields in the United States as the construction industry scrambles to replace the bulk of welders entering their 50s and eyeing retirement. More

From trash to treasure
Tampa Tribune    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
When Andy Hamilton visits garage sales and flea markets around Lutz, Fla., it doesn't matter if he finds the hedge trimmers are rusted and the handsaws are dull or slightly bent. Adding large doses of ingenuity, imagination and creativity, plus a spot of welding, he will repurpose those purchases — plus car parts and gadgets — as original art. Visitors at plant shows, green markets, automotive swap meets and craft shows from Tampa and Dunedin to Lakeland and Bushnell probably have seen his wacky work — and likely paused to analyze the metal art. KWCH-TV    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The skill of welding joins two pieces of metal and now an advanced program at Salina Tech in Salina, Kan., will join newly-skilled workers with jobs. "It is a lot of practice to make it perfect, hours and hours," student Daniel Muchow said. Muchow was 11 when he developed a passion for the trade. "If something broke out at the farm, dad hands it to me, I get in there and help him out," Muchow said. More students could start a career in welding, now that Salina Tech has received a $200,000 grant. The grant will get more tools into the students' hands, which will, in turn, increase the workforce in Salina. More
