Such is the case for many companies. It's not that there aren't workers — it's simply that there aren't qualified or skilled workers for these positions. More

China's exports, imports fall in October
Agence France-Presse via Industry Week    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Falling demand caused by economic woes in Europe and the United States, as well as tightening measures at home, sent China's exports and imports sinking in October, official data showed. The figures will likely fuel fears over the country's manufacturing sector, which employs hundreds of millions of people and is a key driver of the world's No. 2 economy, while boosting the chances of an easing in credit controls. US demand for welding equipment, consumables to exceed $7 billion in 2015
Canadian Industrial Equipment News    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Demand in the U.S. for welding equipment and consumables is expected to increase 6.4 percent annually to $7.1 billion in 2015. Gains will be driven by continued recovery from the economic recession experienced between late 2007 and 2009 in major manufacturing and construction markets. Growth will also be fueled by the increasing number of applications in which various types of welding can be used. These and other trends are presented in Welding Equipment & Consumables, a new study from The Freedonia Group, an industry research firm. More

Most prices falling; producers see bottom, others uncertain
Steel Business Briefing    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The prices of most finished steel products, particularly strip, continued to fall. Producers were claiming they were at a bottom. In addition, they were talking about more output cuts, but at the same time hoping that others will cut first, that the market would move into balance, and they would thus not have to stop any further blast furnaces. Design, welds and the future of steel
Knovel Blog    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
For the past century, welding has been a fundamental aspect of design, and according to Andrew Davis from the American Welding Society, that isn't going to change anytime soon. As AWS partnered with Knovel to release the latest subject area: Welding Engineering and Materials Joining, the Knovel Blog editor recently sat down with Andrew to talk about innovative welding techniques, the challenge of changing international safety standards and above all — why steel is here to stay. South Carolina plant hiring workers with right stuff
The Herald    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Supermetal has put out the "help wanted" sign, but not without a degree of apprehension. There should be no shortage of applicants. Since the steel fabrication plant began operations almost 14 months ago, there has been no shortage of interest. The Catawba region — Chester, Lancaster and York counties — has the highest unemployment rate of any South Carolina region at 14.7 percent as of September. Supermetal officials are concerned whether they will get applicants with the necessary skills and experience to take the plant to the next level of production. Supermetal needs welders, fitters and inspectors. More

Holland, Mich.-area manufacturers can't find enough skilled laborers
Holland Sentinel    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Today's teenager faces a discouraging work market: High school counselors say you can't just graduate from high school and find a well-paying job. Twenty-somethings, older brothers and sisters say you can't just graduate from college and stumble into a well-paying job, either. But several area manufacturers say there is a middle road, one that has been out of the educational limelight in recent years. Skills such as welding and machining still are in high demand in towns such as Holland, Mich., a town that makes things. More

A respected international company is looking to build its first heavy-equipment manufacturing plant in the United States, and Canyon County, Idaho, has made the top-five list. But before committing to this area, the company — whose name can't be released yet — wants to see what kind of skilled workers are available. The Boise Valley Economic Partnership and the Idaho Department of Labor are accepting applications from those with professional welding skills, specifically in MIG/TIG aluminum plate welding. As many as 60 welders may be hired if the project proceeds. More
