Manufacturers waking up to potential of 'Dream It, Do It' to attract younger workers
The Buffalo News    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Manufacturers are determined to close the "skills gap" they say exists between the job openings they have and the job seekers who are not qualified for them. With an aging manufacturing workforce, the drive to close the gap has taken on greater urgency. Enter a program called "Dream It, Do It," coming soon to some Buffalo Niagara, N.Y.-area high schools. It's designed to expose young people to careers in advanced manufacturing, knock down stereotypes about those jobs and, ideally, attract employees of the future. More

Aerospace manufacturer to move operations to Kettering, Ohio
Dayton Business Journal    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
An aerospace equipment manufacturer bought a building in Kettering, Ohio, to relocate its assembly arm closer to its supply chain. Aviation Ground Equipment purchased a 25,000-square-foot building on Lance Drive for $450,000, according to Montgomery County Auditor records. The Freeport, N.Y.-based company previously housed its engineering division in an 8,000-square-foot space it leased in Miamisburg, Ohio. But because a majority of its suppliers and engineering talent are located within 200 miles of Dayton, the company decided to move its equipment manufacturing business into Kettering. More

Welding inspection can reduce costs by detecting discontinuities in the early stages of manufacturing, reducing the cost of rework and extending the life of components by detecting flaws. Non-destructive testing methods can identify cracking, porosity, incomplete penetration, misalignment, inclusions, lack of fusion and similar conditions, which can compromise weld strength. MORE

Borough Furnace molds new manufacturing in Syracuse, NY
The Post-Standard    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
In an old, once-abandoned factory at Geddes and West Fayette streets in Syracuse, N.Y., a model for American manufacturing is emerging. A young company, Borough Furnace, is melting and molding iron by using recycled materials, a green and sustainable process, and creative financing techniques. John Truex, 30, is the founder of Borough Furnace. He spent several years studying sculpture at the University of Tennessee where he became interested in large-scale iron casting. He moved to New York City to work as a designer for high-end furniture maker Dakota Jackson. He said he became frustrated by the disconnect between design and the manufacturing process. After a few years, he left to focus on manufacturing his own designs and returned to his love for iron casting. More

Machine class powers students in Gillette, Wyo.
The Associated Press via San Francisco Chronicle    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
There are some big bonuses coming out of a combined Gillette College-Campbell County High School machining class in Gillette, Wyo., that's the first of its kind in the community and perhaps the state. Students in the class figure they save $1,000 toward a college certificate or degree. They are introduced to a college-level program and can earn eight free college credits. And, the program puts to use a full-service shop at Campbell County High School that was gathering a bit of dust. Eventually, organizers hope the program at CCHS will grow to the point that students can graduate with a high school diploma and receive a college certificate in machining on the same day. More

Donation pushes Aiken Tech closer to new training center
The Augusta Chronicle    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Savannah River Site's security contractor, WSI-SRS, has pledged $60,000 to Aiken Technical College's proposed Center for Energy and Advanced Manufacturing. The center will support academic programs — initially radiation protection technology, nuclear quality systems, welding and mechatronics — that are crucial to supporting the area's growing manufacturing, nuclear and energy workforce needs. Those courses are being taught from older facilities on campus. Aiken Tech also received a $2 million grant this year from the U.S. Economic Development Administration to help build the facility, but the grant requires a $2 million match from other sources. More

Manufacturing problems could delay iMacs
United Press International    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Apple's upcoming iMac all-in-one desktop has been delayed and could miss a major part of the holiday shopping season, a French Apple news site says. French website MacBidouille says the major delay is because of difficulties with a high-tech welding process, called friction-stir welding, that fuses the two major pieces of the iMac's aluminum body together. Touted at Apple's iMac unveiling last month as one of the main reasons for the computer's thinness and improved strength over previous versions, the advanced assembly technique uses high heat and pressure to "intermix the molecules of the two aluminum surfaces" to create a seamless joint. Motivation, money cited among roadblocks to industrial careers    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Pell grants, scholarships, student loans, work-study and paid apprenticeships. All of these are available to people who want to increase their earning power, but roadblocks remain, according to Sydney Raine, president of Mobile Works Inc., in Mobile, Ala. Time and again, he said, job center counselors hear the refrain "I can't afford it," either in terms of time, or, most often, money. Depending on a variety of factors, training at area community colleges typically runs at the very least $1,000 a semester. Some area industries offer paid apprenticeships, such as shipbuilders Austal and Ingalls, primarily to coax people into welding careers. "Everybody is crying for welders, and (with the arrival of Airbus), aerospace is going to be a big area of need," Raine said. More
