Manufacturing growth fastest in 6 months
Reuters via Fox Business    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Rising demand from domestic and foreign customers helped U.S. manufacturing grow in November at its quickest pace in six months, an industry survey showed, though hiring remained sluggish. Financial information firm Markit said its U.S. Manufacturing Purchasing Managers Index rose to 52.8 last month, rebounding from a more than three-year low of 51.0 in October. A reading above 50 indicates expansion. Firms said Hurricane Sandy, which hit in late October, was partly responsible for a jump in domestic new orders, suggesting the pace of growth could slow in the months ahead. More

'Skills gap' may hold key to filling jobs of the future
Beloit Daily News    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
For Jessie McGowan it was gardening with her mother. For Alex Pierce it was about finding stable work. Both recently started over in their careers, and decided to get their welding certificate at Blackhawk Technical College. Without knowing it, both were entering into an industry that is desperate for qualified workers. So desperate that the amount of welding jobs outweighs the number of trained potential employees, and has created a noticeable "skills gap" in not just welding, but other manufacturing jobs and health care positions. Technology and an aging workforce combined to form the gap, and one that educators and employers saw coming, Blackhawk Technical College President Tom Eckert said. More

5 ways the industrial Internet will change manufacturing
Forbes    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
For manufacturers, a global economy means tougher competition, more demanding customer needs and fast-paced change. In order to win in a volatile environment, companies must produce the best products, faster and at the lowest cost. Creating more efficiency is the only way to accomplish this, and manufacturers increasingly are turning to technology to get them there. The industrial Internet is enabling this change to be more productive by making the physical world of industry more intelligent. By connecting machines to the Internet via software, data is produced and insight into the manufacturing process is gained, writes Jody Markopolous. More

Opinion: Millions of young Americans aren't prepared for 21st-century jobs
The Charleston Gazette    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Here's a puzzle: Question: Why does America have 3 million empty jobs that employers are struggling to fill — while millions remain unemployed in the wake of the Great Recession? Answer: Mostly because jobless people lack special skills needed for the vacant positions. Columnist Thomas Friedman described a Minnesota welding shop that sought to hire 10 high-quality, nationally certified welders for a government contract to affix armor onto military Humvees. Plenty of applicants wanted the $20-an-hour work — but they had learned to weld in neighborhood garages or high school training classes and lacked top-grade expertise. Shop owner Traci Tapani explained that it's because they don't understand the science behind welding. More
