Manufacturing jobs readily available with no skilled workers to fill positions
Fox News    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Anyone who tells you the jobs just aren't out there has not spoken with the employers at Excel Foundry and machine in Pekin, Ill. That company is trying to expand but is having difficulty. Excel says the reason for this is because recruiters cannot fill the job vacancies. Yes, you read that right, they can not fill the vacancies. "We're absolutely frustrated, we're doing everything we can to attract employees we desperately need right now," says Doug Parsons with Excel. The catch is that Excel, like many U.S. manufacturers, is looking to hire skilled workers. That means tradesmen with training like welders, pipe fitters and machinists. That is where the problem lies. More

Welding student's work praised at AWS state meeting
The Sierra Vista Herald    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Michael Dominguez immediately was intrigued by the contest organized by the Arizona section of the American Welding Society. In fact, he was pretty confident he'd win it. Never mind that he started welding only a few of months ago, when he stepped foot onto the Cochise College campus as a freshman this fall semester. His dad knows how to weld, so he'd seen the process many times before. Combine that with Dominguez's guidance from Cochise College welding instructors Randy Fox and Dr. Ralph Long, and he ended up in a tie for first place in the statewide competition held in October. Skilled workers beat out degree holders for jobs
Education Week    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
In the debate over the value of a bachelor's degree, the usual argument is that its holders earn on average about $1 million more over their lifetime than those with only a high school diploma. But like all generalizations, the truth is far more nuanced, as The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal made clear on consecutive days. What they reported warrants further examination. More

Is manufacturing still too slow at adopting transformational new technologies?
Manufacturing Executive Community    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
There's little doubt that the increasing focus on, and rising investment in, innovative new information technologies is now transforming many manufacturing businesses around the world. But some of the latest cross-industry research suggests that, by comparison to other sectors, manufacturing still seems to be slow to adopt transformational technologies at the same rate. More

Help wanted: In unexpected twist, some skilled jobs go begging
The Wall Street Journal (Subscription)    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Ferrie Bailey's job should be easy: hiring workers amid the worst stretch of unemployment since the Depression. A recruiter for Union Pacific Corp., she has openings to fill, the kind that sometimes seem to have all but vanished: secure, well-paying jobs with good benefits that don't require a college degree. But they require specialized skills — expertise in short supply even with the unemployment rate at 9 percent. More

Training gap faces US manufacturing
Forbes    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The good news is the most recent regional meeting of the Advanced Manufacturing Partnership committee presented is the improvement over the past few years in manufacturing job growth. But the more somber news, in the longer trend, shows the arrows pointing in the other direction. Ten years ago, according to the official conference briefing document, the U.S. "enjoyed a trade surplus in advanced technology manufactured goods. Today, that category accounts for an $81 billion annual trade deficit, meaning that we are buying back technologies that, in many cases, we invented." More

New patent-pending method allows laser welding at twice the speed
Industrial Laser Solutions    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
A new patent-pending method developed by Dreistern of Germany, makes it possible to laser weld roll-formed parts continuously, even though the profile-forming system is operated in the start-stop mode. In this way, the advantages of start-stop production and continuous welding can be combined. The system speed is often limited by the welding process, but on a series production system delivered in spring 2011 it was possible to double the speed using this method. In addition, there is the advantage of a continuous weld seam with its consistent quality that gives the profile extremely high torsional stiffness. More

Gretchen Zierick: Are women the answer to shortage of skilled workers in manufacturing?
Manufacturing & Technology News    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
A recent study from the Manufacturing Institute reported that almost 80 percent of American manufacturers are reporting trouble filling open positions despite a national 9 percent unemployment rate in the United States. In addition, 25 percent of the current manufacturing work force is age 55 or older, with few young skilled workers available to replace them as these longtime employees near retirement. One way to address the lack of skilled workers would be to attract more women to manufacturing careers and mentor them so that they encourage other women to look at this sector for a career. More

Former Harley employee is welding his own destiny
The York Daily Record    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
It's the little shop that Harley built, if you want to think of it that way. Sixteen years of paychecks from the Milwaukee-based motorcycle manufacturer's Springettsbury Township, Pa., operations helped pay for the Dallastown, Pa., metal-working shop where Scott Hess now spends most of his time. The man who once represented more than 60 bike assemblers as a steward for the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers Local 175 is now his own boss — twisting and bending strips of brass, aluminum, iron and bronze into ornate shapes and sizes.
