Attention AzPA Members: Due to the limited number of submissions received, we have extended the deadline for Board of Directors and Award Nominations. AzPA members, we urge you to participate in nominating a peer or colleague for a 2015-2016 Board of Directors position. Visit today (Member Login Required) Open positions include:

  • Southwest District Director
  • Industry Representative
As a membership privilege, you also have the opportunity to honor a colleague by nominating him or her for a prestigious pharmacy award. These awards will be presented at the Annual Convention this June. Download a PDF of the award descriptions and criteria.

Phoenix Kicks Butts April 20-24
Participate in the Smoking Cessation Awareness Campaign this month. The Arizona Pharmacy Association is joining multiple organizations to encourage Arizona smokers contact the Arizona Smokers' Helpline for tools to kick the addiction. This campaign will be promoted in newsletters, social media, radio stations, hospitals and more throughout Phoenix. We have infographics and flyers available to present to your patients. ASHP Arizona Delegates — Call for Feedback
As one of the three Arizona Delegates to the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists, I am contacting you to ask for your feedback on the proposed policies and recommendations that ASHP will be voting on this June 2015 at the ASHP Summer Meeting. Please forward your comments or suggestions by Friday, April 17, 2015 at noon to Mindy Burnworth, Download a short six-page article that summarizes nearly 30 policies. Please review the policies and provide us any comments or suggestions to further strengthen or clarify.

As a quick reminder, the responsibilities of ASHP state delegates include:
  1. Develop an understanding of the issues on the House of Delegates agenda,
  2. Learn the perspectives of ASHP members in the state on those issues (please forward your comments/suggestions), THIS IS WHERE YOU COME IN!!!
  3. Participate in a Regional Delegate Conference (scheduled for May 2015),
  4. Participate in the House of Delegates session (scheduled for June 2015), and
  5. reporting back to ASHP members in the state on the outcome of the House session (will occur post Summer meeting)

Reducing CMS readmission penalties for COPD: What pharmacists can do
Pharmacy Times
Hospital readmissions are a major driver of spending in the Medicare program. The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services added chronic obstructive pulmonary disease to this year's list of conditions for which hospitals can be penalized. These penalties are designed to encourage the implementation of practices to reduce readmission rates.

New combination vaccine licensed for 4- to 6-year-olds
FDA and Sanofi Pasteur Inc. recently announced the licensing of a new vaccine for use in children 4 to 6 years of age to complete the diphtheria, tetanus and pertussis vaccination series and inactivated poliovirus vaccination series.

Smokers can depend on tobacco dependence treatment

Cigarette smoking continues to lead to premature death with almost a half-million smokers dying each year in the U.S. Tobacco use causes numerous preventable diseases, including cancer as well as cardiovascular and pulmonary illnesses. A recent Mayo Clinic Proceedings research study and editorial on "Helping Smokers Quit in the 'Real World,'" shows that smokers attempting to quit, using specialist clinics plus prescription medications, had more than 2.5 times the chance for successful abstinence versus unassisted quit attempts.

National action plan for combating antibiotic-resistant bacteria
The White House released its National Action Plan for Combating Antibiotic-resistant Bacteria, a detailed plan to address the issue of antibiotic resistance. The 63-page plan outlines steps for adopting the National Strategy for Combating Antibiotic-Resistant Bacteria and implementing the policy recommendations of the President's Council of Advisors on Science and Technology. The plan lists five goals.
