Interview with Dr. David Healy

There are many roads one can travel on within the world of medicine. Some take their training down the pathway of clinical practice and patient care. Others will steer themselves toward the scholarly street of science and studies. A few apply their brains to the boulevard of books and blogs. And some head straight for the highway and become internationally recognized innovators. Dr. David Healy is one of a few to actually manage all of the above.

Map: Bad Rx decisions cost poor US states most

The U.S. wasted $418 billion in 2012 based on bad medication-related decisions, and the impact was most deeply felt in those states that could least afford it, according to new research Express Scripts recently released. While these costly decisions impact the entire nation, analysis shows that they have a disproportionate effect on the poorest states.

Kroger pharmacy expansion is contaminated by a compounder

The compounding pharmacy scandal has caused still more collateral damage, and this time it involves one of the largest supermarket chains in the U.S. Who are we talking about? Kroger, owner of Axium Healthcare Pharmacy, a specialty operator that the food and pharmacy retailer purchased last year in a bid to broaden its already large and fast-growing pharmacy business.
Study shows dialysis patients who use DaVita Rx live longer

DaVita, a division of DaVita HealthCare Partners, announced study results showing that, on average, patients using its pharmacy, DaVita Rx, are 21 percent more likely to live longer than patients who do not use DaVita Rx. The study, recently published by the American Journal of Kidney Diseases, also found that dialysis patients who use DaVita Rx spent 14 percent fewer days in the hospital each year, which equates to 1.8 fewer hospital days per patient per year.
California bill would accord pharmacists provider status

A bill to recognize California pharmacists as "healthcare providers who have the authority to provide healthcare services" was introduced Feb. 21 in the state Senate and amended April 1. "There's the potential it could be signed by the governor in September," said Dawn Benton, executive vice president of the California Society of Health-System Pharmacists, a co-sponsor of the bill.

Clot-busting in pulmonary embolism: Worth the risk?

Physicians treating unstable patients with pulmonary embolism should, in most cases, administer thrombolytic therapy regardless of a patient's age or comorbidities, Michigan State University researchers suggest. Unfortunately, that message is not getting across to clinicians, according to the investigators. In their database study of 72,230 unstable patients with PE — a blockage of arteries in the lungs caused by clots moving from the legs — only one-third of the patients in shock or on a ventilator received thrombolytic therapy.

Tim Davis, owner of Beaver Health Mart Pharmacy in Beaver, Pa., testified on behalf of the National Community Pharmacists Association at the U.S. House Energy and Commerce Subcommittee on Health hearing on making the pharmaceutical supply chain more secure and safe. With legislation having recently been introduced in both the House and Senate, Davis' remarks focused on the need for more uniform standards; expressed concerns about potentially burdensome legislative requirements on small-business community pharmacies; and highlighted how pharmacies are already addressing the problem.
New diabetes guidelines take comprehensive approach

The American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists has released new diabetes guidelines that provide algorithms for treatment but also call for therapy to be tailored to the needs of individual patients. For the first time, the guidelines also incorporate obesity, prediabetes and cardiovascular health management, in recognition of the ways these factors interact with diabetes.
APhA to CMS: Include MTM in medical loss ratio calculation

In April 16 comments on a CMS proposed rule on medical loss ratio requirements for Medicare Advantage and Part D, APhA recommended that pharmacist-provided medication therapy management be specifically listed as a healthcare quality — improving activity included in the calculation of MLR.

The U.S. government recently announced its second civil fraud lawsuit against Novartis AG in four days, accusing a unit of the Swiss drugmaker of paying multimillion-dollar kickbacks to doctors in exchange for prescribing its drugs.

In a small survey of patients who failed to fill their prescription for statin therapy, more than half reported not doing so because of concerns about side effects, while 2 out of every 3 patients expressed general concerns about taking the lipid-lowering medication. Similarly, a majority of patients decided to try making changes to their lifestyle before filling the prescription at the pharmacy.
