From March 28: Several CEMA and PGANE members testified last week against a bill that would have taxed all carbon based fuels out of existence. The proposed tax would start at 17cpg for heating oil and diesel, propane 10cpg, gasoline 15cpg, natural gas 9cpg, electricity 2cpg in the first year and increase every year after — forever!

From October 10: CEMA/ENTECH Creates "Charles S. Isenberg Scholarship" to Support HVACR Student
CEMA was informed by his son that Charlie Isenberg passed away last month on September 12, 2019. Charlie was synonymous with the petroleum industry for the 50 years he was associated with the Connecticut Petroleum Association (CPA), which became the Independent Connecticut Petroleum Association in the '70s, the predecessor to CEMA. Initially he worked for his brother, Lee Isenberg, who ran an association management company of which CPA was a client.

From April 11: A bill that will create a new payroll tax will affect approximately 104,000 employers who employ 1.5 million people who will be eligible to take up to 12 weeks paid leave per year, has advanced to the state Senate for consideration.

From March 14: Language for a new carbon tax bill in Connecticut is out, and there will be a hearing on the bill, No. 1064, starting at 11 a.m. on Monday, March 18 in Room 2B at the Legislative Office Building in Hartford. The bill's language is identical to that of bills proposed the last two years.

From September 12: Last week, Governor Ned Lamont issued an executive order that sets a goal for a 100% carbon-free electric grid in the state by 2040 to combat climate change. This is the most definitive step that the state has taken to comply with the state law that requires 45% emissions reductions below 2001 levels by 2030 and an 80% emissions reductions below 2001 levels by 2050.

From September 12: The Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP) recently reached out to CEMA concerning what they believe is an increase in the number of residential heating oil tank leaks. DEEP has asked CEMA to work with them on how to reduce the number of tank leaks by implementing potential inspection programs or other strategies so that the issues is addressed. CEMA's legislative and executive committee will be meeting to come up with suggestions on how to respond to DEEP's concerns.

From April 11: As the state is pushing consumers to heat with electricity, we thought we'd present the real cost of electric heat, compared to heating oil. First we look at the tariffs the electric utilities file with PURA, the state's regulatory authority. Once we calculate the tariffs, and add the utilities' supply charges, we get a total cost in Kilowatt hours (KWH).

From June 11: The Connecticut General Assembly approved a state budget prior to adjournment on Wednesday at midnight. The budget includes an additional $861.5 million in revenue in the first year, and $921.3 million in the second year of the budget to help close a $3.7 billion deficit. The budget plays a dangerous game by diverting about $58.2 million in revenue that was supposed to go to the Special Transportation Fund in the first year and $119 million in the second year.
