CEMA
On Tuesday, CEMA submitted a brief to the state Supreme Court concerning our lawsuit that claims that the Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP) failed to comply with the Connecticut Environmental Policy Act (CEPA). CEPA requires that any project proposed by the state that could cause significant environmental damage is required to perform an environmental impact evaluation (EIE). To read the brief, click here.

Last year, the U.S. Supreme Court handed down a decision in Tibble v. Edison where employees in a company sued their employer for selecting retirement plans whose fees were too expensive. The Court ruled in favor of the employees, saying, among other things, that "a trustee has a continuing duty — separate and apart from the duty to exercise prudence in selecting investments at the outset — to monitor, and remove, imprudent trust investments."

Question: Can the company request an employee, including a pregnant worker, to sign a waiver from liability, due to potential danger of on-the-job injury sustained or harm sustained, at the hands of a mental health patient who is a resident of our facility? Would a request for waiver of liability expose the company to pregnancy discrimination, based on terms of employment, work conditions or any other employment terms?

As millions dig out from some of the heaviest snowfalls ever to hit the eastern United States, many may have questions about the claims filing process. In the event of storm-related damage, contact your insurance professional as soon as possible. Let them know the extent of the damage and where you can be reached if you had to relocate. Those filing a flood insurance claim should contact the same agent or broker who sold them the policy.

U.S. Sen. Ed Markey lashed out at the Energy Department for approving the export of domestic natural gas via pipeline to a Canadian shipping port, saying the move "would be a disaster for our consumers and our region" because it would link New England energy prices to international markets. Markey said the Feb. 5 announcement regarding the Goldboro Liquefied Natural Gas Project in Nova Scotia confirms his view "that the ultimate goal of some natural gas pipeline proposals" is to "use New England as a throughway to export U.S. natural gas to Canada and ultimately to overseas markets" instead of helping residents.

Gasoline prices may soon dip below $1 per gallon at some stations in the Midwest, putting the price of unleaded fuel in the same category as a pack of gum or a bag of pretzels from the vending machine.
"The cheapest gasoline prices in over 12 years are showing up in some lucky states in the heart of the nation, with previously unthinkable 99-cent gasoline becoming a strong possibility as wholesale gas prices plunge amidst growing supply," GasBuddy.com senior analyst Patrick DeHaan said in an email.

As the massive natural gas leak in Aliso Canyon continues to pump methane into the air above Los Angeles, environmental activists are warning about a much bigger and more widespread crisis that is not drawing nearly as much attention: leaks throughout the nation's oil and gas supply chain. A series of studies spearheaded by the Environmental Defense Fund beginning in 2012 found problems across the country at every point of the natural gas supply chain, from thousands of wellheads to miles of utility lines underneath city streets.
