In an article published in the New Haven Register on Feb. 20, CEMA President Chris Herb called on Amos Smith, the CEO of the Community Action Agency of New Haven, to resign. As reported previously, CAANH has been plagued with cash flow management problems, going into arrears by hundreds of thousands of dollars with fuel dealers participating in the Low Income Energy Assistance Program.

There will be a public hearing this Friday, March 2 at noon before the General Assembly's Finance Committee on revenue items in the governor's budget. This budget includes proposals to increase the gasoline excise tax by 7 cents/gallon over four years (from the current 25 cents/gall to 32 cents/gall). The bill also raises the cigarette excise tax by 25 cents per pack (230 mills/cigarette)

The gas utility tariffs for March 2018 are in. You can compare these rates to your own prices. Gas prices were mixed compared to last month, on average one cent higher than February (Eversource is up sharply by 11 cents, SCG & CNG are down 3-4 cents).

The winter of 2017-2018 presented some real challenges for many heating fuel marketers, especially at the turn of the new year. Due to the descent of a prolonged arctic air mass from the north pole, consumer consumption spiked. Commercial gas interruptible accounts switched to diesel fuel, soaking up millions of gallons of fuel. There were intermittent supply disruptions, especially on the propane side.

President Trump is reportedly open to a U.S. Chamber of Commerce proposal that would increase motor fuels excise taxes by 25 cents-per-gallon (cpg). If enacted, the increase would raise federal taxes on gasoline and diesel fuel to 43.4 cpg and 49.4 cpg, respectively.

Futures in New York fell from the settlement Feb. 27 after the American Petroleum Institute was said to have reported U.S. crude stockpiles expanded by 933,000 barrels last week. On Feb. 26, the FOX61 newsroom got an alarming email message from Oscar Rodriguez, 24, who made the startling claim. Democrat Phil Young scored a stunning upset on Tuesday in Stratford, defeating well-known Republican Bill Cabral by slightly more than 60 votes in a contest to fill the 120th House seat vacated by Mayor Laura Hoydick on Jan. 2. By winning, Young becomes the first Democrat in 44 years to represent Stratford’s 120th, which covers most of the North End. The unofficial tally was 1,615 for Young and 1,552 for Cabral.
