The gas utility tariffs for June 2017 are in and we compare them to average retail heating oil prices. First, the state survey shows the average heating oil retail rate in Connecticut for May 29 as $2.00/gall (down 10 cents from last month), ranging from $2.67/gall in Fairfield County to $2.17/gall. in New London County.

A member recently asked us if they were required to install electronic logging devices in their commercial motor vehicles. For most members, these devices are not required, since they only apply if you currently are subject to carrying in-cab paper logbooks more than eight days in a 30-day period; and most members are exempt from this current requirement if their truck does not travel more than 100 air miles from its base (the "short-haul" exemption).

In a deal valued at $1.7 billion, Eversource Energy plans to buy Bridgeport-based Aquarion Water co., the region's largest private water utility, from Macquarie Infrastructure Partners. Eversource said it would pay $880 million in cash and assume $795 million of Aquarion's debt. The deal would add more than 300 employees to Eversource's 8,000-person workforce across Connecticut, Massachusetts and New Hampshire.

A federal judge has dismissed Total Wine & More's lawsuit over the state's mandatory minimum pricing laws, finding that federal antitrust laws cannot preempt the state law that establishes Connecticut's liquor pricing system. In her decision, U.S. District Court Judge Janet C. Hall, who heard the case in the Connecticut District, said that whether or not the statutory and regulatory scheme implemented by Connecticut is "wise" is not a question for the federal court.
