The U.S. DOT's Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) has withdrawn a proposed rule that would have required CDL drivers to be screened for obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) as part of their biennial CDL medical exam. OSA is a respiratory disorder characterized by a reduction or cessation of breathing during sleep that is generally attributed to obesity.

More than 50 local law enforcement agencies along with the state police are joining the Connecticut Department of Transportation's Highway Safety Office in the "U DRIVE. U TEXT. U PAY" initiative. U.S. health officials said Friday they want tobacco companies to make all cigarettes with such low levels of nicotine that they are no longer addictive, part of a sweeping regulatory overhaul that threatens Big Tobacco's main moneymaker. Connecticut and New England's largest utility, Eversource, said its second-quarter profits climbed 13.3 percent mainly on lower operating expenses. The electric and gas utility provider, which is in the process of acquiring Aquarion Water Co., reported net income of $230.7 million, or 72 cents per diluted share, up from $203.6 million, or 64 cents, a year ago.
