The State Supreme Court will hear CEMA's claim that the Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP) did not follow state law concerning natural gas expansion in the state at 11 a.m. Friday, Oct. 14 in Hartford. The court will determine whether or not the Connecticut Environmental Policy Act (CEPA) that requires state agencies to perform environmental impact evaluations (EIE) in connection with DEEP's involvement in the statewide natural gas expansion and conversion project applies.

Following up on CEMA's success in working with Massachusetts (MEMA) and Rhode Island (OHIRI) in putting together the Southern New England Energy Conference in Newport, Rhode Island, both CEMA and the NY Oil Heating Association (NYOHA) based in New York City and the Oil Heat Institute of Long Island (based in Suffolk County) will hold a joint education conference on Nov. 1 at the Hyatt Regency in Greenwich, Connecticut.

In light of the recent natural gas explosion in Patterson, New Jersey, which destroyed two homes and damaged 13 others, the Christian Science Monitor published a report exploring recent large explosions and fires involving natural gas lines. "One factor has received increasing attention over the past decade: the role of aging pipelines, especially in the Northeast where pipe infrastructure can be more than 100 years old," the Monitor reported.

It sounds like a broken record, but once again Connecticut is talking about potential layoffs, and plans are being considered to closed two vocational schools. Fixed costs are estimated to increase by $1.1 billion for the next fiscal year, and Gov. Dannel Malloy has asked state agencies to come up with proposals that would take into account a 10 percent reduction in spending.
