Five Spots Still Open for Friday's Hazmat Operations Recertification Class
CEMA's last DOT/OSHA Operations Recertification class, Friday, October 23, 8:30 am, still has five open spots for students. The class will discuss hazardous communications, transportation of hazardous materials, the table of hazardous materials, the emergency response guide, shipping papers, hours of service, the Drug and Alcohol Clearinghouse, CDL license renewal, SDS sheets, security requirements and much more and hazardous material spill response and cleanup (dam, dike, divert).

Free Fuel Testing
Starting this fall, CEMA will be conducting FREE in house biodiesel testing. Back in 2016, CEMA's Executive Committee agreed to utilize a portion of our NORA R&D funds to do a study that tracked the sulfur and biodiesel content of heating oil in Connecticut. CEMA contracted with UCONN's School of Environmental Sciences & Engineering to test samples for biodiesel and sulfur content and provided us with their findings.

CFTC Finalizes Position Limits Rule

The Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) issued its long-delayed position limits rule mandated by the "Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform Act" to curb excessive speculation in energy and other commodities futures contracts by a 3 — 2 vote. The final position limits rule applies to 25 physically settled and linked cash-settled futures contracts, options on futures contracts, and "economically equivalent swaps."

PMAA Changes Name to EMA
The Petroleum Marketers Association of America (PMAA) has declared a "new era" for is members and the fuels industry and has renamed itself the Energy Marketers of America (EMA). The name change reflects the industry's growing portfolio of liquid fuels and other alternative energy sources such as renewable diesel and biodiesel that have "played a critical role in lowering emissions over the past half century," said the Alexandria, Virginia based group, a federation of state and regional trade associations that collectively represent about 8,000 independent petroleum marketers.

SBA Simplifies Forgiveness for Smaller PPP Loans

The U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) has simplified the forgiveness process for Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) loans of $50,000 or less. Outlined in an Interim Final Rule, the new process still requires borrowers to furnish required documentation. However, the SBA now offers a new streamlined Form 3508S that allows borrowers to effectively self-certify eligibility for loan forgiveness.

Methane emissions up in 2020 amid turbulent year for oil and gas

Methane emissions have jumped so far this year even as oil and gas production has been hit hard by the coronavirus pandemic.
The report from Kayrros, which analyzes methane leaks through satellite imagery, found visible methane emissions jumped 32 percent in the first eight months of 2020 when compared with the same period in 2019.
