Gas vs. oil: So what do consumers really think about their energy choices?
CEMA
At this year’s Southern New England Energy Conference in Newport, Rhode Island I had the good fortune of moderating a consumer panel that dug deep into what consumers really think about oil heat, natural gas, propane, electric and bioheat. The panel was comprised of six men and women representing all buying groups including homeowners, “about to be” homeowners, users of natural gas, former and current oil heat customers, electric heat customers and even one who used a mix of wood pellets, propane and a heat pump.

Cash vs. credit pricing at the gas pump draws penalties
CEMA
The Department of Consumer Protection has fined several gas stations that offer cash discounts who are failing to disclose at the point of purchase that debit transactions will not receive the discount price. State law requires that any gas station that offers a cash discount disclose to the purchaser that the use of a debit card will not receive the discount price.

Shale oil: Not all it's fracked up to be
CEMA
In his second Union address to Congress in January 2012, President Obama claimed that, “We have a supply of natural gas that can last America nearly 100 years.” This is absolutely untrue. The U.S. has far less years of natural gas supply from shale or unconventional sources. There is a difference between resources and reserves.

The part of the story not getting covered about CL&P rate hike
ENERGY TRUTH
The author, Chris Herb, is outraged by this latest utility rate increase and you should be too! CL&P is trying to spin it like this; it’s only 17 dollars a month but in Connecticut where everything is taxed, except the air we breathe which no doubt could be next, 17 dollars a month is a lot of money for senior citizens living on a fixed income, single mothers already working two jobs to make ends meet, or some two family income households where there just aren’t enough hours in the day to work and pay all the bills.

New England electricity prices spike as gas pipelines lag
American Energy Coalition
Utilities in New England have announced electricity rates hikes on the order of 30 percent to 50 percent, making prices some of the highest in the history of the continental U.S., according to a recent article by National Public Radio (NPR). These changes appear to have come out of nowhere to consumers, but in reality, they have been a long time coming, according to NPR.

New England may face scheduled blackouts due to poor natural gas supply
WGBH-TV
Both of the region’s primary electric utilities have announced double-digit rate increases in recent weeks, leaving some residential customers wondering how they’ll pay an extra $30 a month or more. But beyond the rate hikes, New England is in the midst of an energy crisis. It’s facing serious questions about the future of its energy supply.

Malloy may run afoul of his pledges whether taxing or cutting spending
The Connecticut Mirror
Governor Dannel P. Malloy faces plenty of critics who argue he can’t balance the next state budget without breaking his campaign pledge not to raise taxes. But Malloy will be equally hard-pressed to close next year’s $1.3 billion-to-$1.4 billion deficit with spending cuts, given the many pledges and fiscal principles he has espoused since taking office four years ago.

Connecticut utility regulators approve power rate hikes
New Haven Register
Less than two weeks after the United Illuminating Co. and Connecticut Light & Power submitted their requests to state utility regulators, Connecticut’s Public Utilities Regulatory Authority on approved the generation charges for the next six months. The rates submitted by CL&P and UI to PURA were based on competitive auctions held earlier this year to acquire the estimated power needs of both utilities’ standard offer customers.

The Connecticut Mirror
The legislature’s two budget-writing panels grilled Gov. Dannel P. Malloy’s fiscal staff recently about the new state deficit — and the administration’s latest cuts to reduce it.
