From Jan. 7: After reporting last month that the sales tax exemption on Energy Star equipment will be expiring Jan. 1, we received a number of calls regarding the proper way to apply sales tax to installation and service jobs. Regarding applicability of sales tax on an installation, basically for residential work, you pay sales tax to your supply house on the equipment, then include it in your pricing to the customer. Everything else is called "labor" or "service charge" and is not subject to sales tax.

From May 12: Last week, the town of New Canaan abandoned efforts to bring natural gas to their town. Three years ago, they were one of the very first communities in Connecticut targeted by Gov. Malloy's natural gas expansion and conversion plan. The wealthy Fairfield County town had the support of local politicians who were partnering with Yankee Gas to facilitate the project.

From Sept. 29: Beginning Dec. 6, Connecticut Department of Motor Vehicles will require proof of U.S. Citizenship, lawful permanent residence or temporary legal presence, along with proof of Connecticut residency for holders of commercial driver licenses and permits. The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration is mandating this requirement. This applies to CDL NEW licenses, RENEWAL licenses and learner's PERMITS.
