The U.S. retirement system, often referred to as a three-legged stool, has become increasingly unstable. The first leg, defined benefit plans, are shrinking fast, while second leg personal savings - to include savings plans like the 401 (k) - is also in decline. The last leg - Social Security - is the country's only 'guaranteed retirement income source', and is the primary income source for fully one third of American retirees. The program will discuss factors leading to today's dire situation along with public policy and private sector solutions to provide adequate retirement income for millions of Americans. Attendees will also hear from leading plan sponsors about current initiatives related to the management of their retirement plans.

Major sovereign bond markets are the cornerstone of the financial system. They not only provide a method for governments to raise funds but also offer low-risk, long-term assets for pension funds and insurance companies to invest in, serve as a yardstick for other asset prices, and give investors a means to hedge interest rate risks. Yet, their smooth functioning cannot be taken for granted.

The idea of privatizing Saudi Aramco, the national hydrocarbons giant in Saudi Arabia, appears to have rekindled the privatization fire in the Middle East. While the announcement of what could theoretically be the largest initial public offering ever envisaged startled even seasoned market observers, its modalities and timeline remain unclear, as confirmed by the company’s chairman in a recent interview.

Money managers increasingly are buying cybersecurity insurance to supplement their technology security strategies to both combat data breaches and deal with repercussions if hackers do break in. About 30 percent of U.S. institutional money managers had cybersecurity insurance coverage as of Jan. 1, sources said, most of which were firms with more than $10 billion in assets under management. That compares with only 5 percent at the start of 2014, they said.

Are you getting gouged on college?
If you come from a relatively low-income family, there's a strong chance you are. In fact, you may be subsidizing the education of a student from an affluent family.
Why? Because many colleges, with limited pots of financial aid money, are cutting off the students that need the most help paying for college. Instead, colleges increasingly are using financial aid money to lure more affluent students.

It has been a volatile ride for online investors this year. In the first five weeks of 2016, a typical stock portfolio filled with Standard & Poor’s 500 shares dropped by more than 10 percent. Happily, by last week, stocks had regained most of the losses, but there are no assurances that another dip isn’t right around the corner.
