Yield-hungry investors helped drive these returns by pouring money into preferred stock index funds.

New Jersey became the state with the worst-funded public pension system in the U.S. in 2015, followed closely by Kentucky and Illinois.
The Garden State had $135.7 billion less than it needs to cover all the benefits that have been promised, a $22.6 billion increase over the prior year, according to data compiled by Bloomberg. Illinois’s unfunded pension liabilities rose to $119.1 billion from $111.5 billion.

Wealthy former New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg again is investing a chunk of his fortune in a hot Chicago-area issue — this time, a proposed tax on soda pop and other sugary drinks in Cook County.
Bloomberg today is launching a $1 million TV ad blitz in the Chicago media market on behalf of the tax, which Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle says is needed to avoid layoffs of law enforcement personnel and others in county government.
