The Canadian Orthopaedic Foundation invites applications for Community Innovation Awards.
The Community Innovation Award celebrates community-based surgeons and research studies dedicated to improving orthopaedic patient care or musculoskeletal health. There are many Canadian orthopaedic surgeons interested in research working in the community, outside a university setting. This program fills a gap in the research landscape in Canada, encouraging community orthopaedic researchers to bring their research ideas to fruition.
Are you a community orthopaedic surgeon with a burning research question? Apply now.
Two $15,000 research awards are available. The deadline for applications is September 8, 2017.
Click here for application forms, guidelines and instructions.

The plaintiffs in a landmark trial challenging B.C.'s public health-care system have lost their bid to be exempt from daily court fees, according to a B.C. Supreme Court ruling.
The Cambie Surgery Centre, a private clinic in Vancouver, along with another private clinic and four patients, launched a lawsuit to challenge B.C.'s ban on the purchase of private insurance for medically necessary services that are already covered by the public system.
It argues the restriction — and the resulting hospital wait times — violates a constitutional right to life, liberty and security of the person.

A growing number of caregivers in British Columbia are feeling distressed and the province's seniors' advocate says that could be a costly problem for the health-care system.
Isobel Mackenzie's office has released a report saying 31 per cent of home care clients now have a caregiver in distress, meaning they're angry, depressed or feel like they can't continue providing care.
The report says the number has jumped seven per cent since the last study in 2015.

End the disgraceful wait times in the emergency room or be fired. That's the latest threat from Gaétan Barrette, Quebec's tough-talking Health and Social Services Minister.
Under proposed legislation, if patients are kept on stretchers in the emergency department for more than 24 hours, managers and physicians of those hospitals would face sanctions, up to and including losing their jobs. Of course, administrators and physicians alike are outraged.

A new poll suggesting an overwhelming majority of Manitobans want the government to release the KPMG report on health care sustainability doesn't seem to be enough to convince the health minister to do it.
Eighty-six per cent of people think it's important the government release the report, which it's using in part to guide drastic changes to health care delivery across the province, according to a new Probe Research/Manitoba Government and General Employees' Union survey.
