Important message for all pilots
By Patrick Gilligan, COPA vice president of operations
COPA needs all pilots to complete a Cross Border survey. Your opinion counts so we need strong participation. Last year, I alerted members to the development of an additional procedure being developed by the Canadian Border Services Agency (CBSA) for crossing the Canada/U.S. border. The survey will provide statistical feedback to Canadian and U.S. officials to find a solution that both addresses their goals and minimizes duplication. COPA is heavily involved in finding creative solutions to minimize the detrimental consequences that any additional requirements will have on our sector of aviation. Please take a few moments and complete the following survey:

ORNGE looks to sell off high-priced helicopter fleet
Ontario's air ambulance service is looking at selling off its fleet of AgustaWestland AW139 helicopters that it bought for $120 million in a troubled deal in 2008. ORNGE issued a request for information Thursday seeking industry advice on possible replacements for the fleet of helicopters that serve as the backbone of its air fleet. The AW139s had a troubled entry into service when it was revealed that a poor cabin design made it difficult for paramedics to tend to patients, including performing CPR.

Pilot loses plane, gets time served for unlawful flight
Toleda Blade
Under the cover of darkness, a Canadian pilot quietly landed his private plane the night of Aug. 29 at the Erie-Ottawa International Airport near Port Clinton, Ohio, delivering a woman to the United States who was prohibited from entering the country. The pilot, Ryan Brandt of Windsor, Ontario, has been in the Lucas County jail ever since, held on federal charges of illegal entry and transporting aliens. Brandt, who admitted he flew at low altitudes to evade radar detection, pleaded guilty Dec. 4 in U.S. District Court, and was sentenced by Judge Jack Zouhary to the five-and-a-half months he already has spent in jail.
