Greenbank and a tale of 3 airports
By Gord Mahaffy
If you think that the concern over the proposed amendments to the National Aeronautics Act is overblown, consider this: In the space of one week there were three public meetings focused on changes to airports in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA). The first was in Oshawa on March 26 to consider the new Oshawa business plan which includes the Oshawa Airport.

The second was in Port Perry on March 30 to consider improvements to the Greenbank airport. The third was on March 31 to present a plan for extending the runways at Billy Bishop Toronto Island Airport (BBTIA). With the exception of a few COPA members all of these meetings were attended by people opposed to any kind of changes whatsoever and many of these people would like to see the airports closed.

Flight school hopefully takes wing
The Peak
Westview Flying Club members hope an initiative to train more Powell River, British Columbia, pilots takes off. After hearing expressions from residents interested in learning more about flight, the flying club decided to host an open house to determine local interest. If there is sufficient local interest, the club will look at flight instruction options. As a new student heads skyward with flight instructor Laurel Tench for the first time, the neophyte at the controls has a real, hands-on experience as a pilot.

The beginning of the light airplane movement
General Aviation News
In the 1920s Great Britain saw a great growth in civil aviation, which was an outgrowth of its light aircraft movement. This movement originated with light plane trials held in Lympne, England. These competitions led to the development of new light aircraft for private ownership and flying clubs. The flying clubs saw thousands of pilots learn to fly in the light planes, creating a market for these aircraft. This, in turn, led to the development of one of the most iconic of light planes, the de Havilland Moth.

Bug repellant airplane coatings tested
Bug smasher pilots everywhere have hope that NASA may be flying to the rescue to save them from the summer chore of cleaning shattered insect bodies from the leading-edge surfaces of their aircraft. NASA, along with Boeing, will be testing five non-stick coatings that are the finalists in a years-long effort to foil the sticky mess that builds up on every surface exposed to the slipstream. The five coatings have already shown their ability to repel bug guts and the water in them, according to a news release, but the winner will also be inexpensive and durable.

Armless pilot to speak at New Smyrna Balloon and Sky Fest
Daytona Beach News-Journal
Jessica Cox was born without arms, but it hasn't stopped her from flying a plane, driving a car or getting a black belt in Taekwondo. There aren't many challenges the 32-year old hasn't conquered despite being born with a rare birth defect. However, there's one she's still trying to tackle — tying her hair in a ponytail. "It just sounds so funny and such a small task, but it's something I'm still working on," she said.
