Ontario honours heroic bomber pilot
Timmins Times
Wilfred DeMarco would be have been proud. He might also have been embarrassed by all the attention, but in Timmins, Ontario, and also in a tiny village in Austria, people are remembering him and his comrades. As a patriot though, he would have been proud seeing the community support at the Timmins Museum. DeMarco was a young Royal Canadian Air Force Flying Officer who grew up in Moneta, in Timmins in the 1920s and 30s.

It might just save your life
Many aviation people think that only float flying should involve egress training. They are incorrect. The fact is that any aircraft operating over or near a body of water has the potential to be forced into a "ditch" landing.

Also common is the misperception that the only egress training available involves hands on sessions at a water facility and emersion recovery training. Again — they are mistaken.

Aviation training heroes getting recognition
Innisfail Province
A memorial monument is in the works for the Red Deer Regional Airport to commemorate those who died while training in Central Alberta. A group of people from various aviation societies are raising $7,000 to create a special six-foot structure to honour those who made an ultimate sacrifice in the region. "Penhold was a training base during the war and after the war but (people) didn't get recognition if they were killed here during training," said Jim Thoreson, president of the Red Deer Flying Club.

Last flying Electra 10 lands at Warplane Heritage for maintenance
Hamilton Spectator
Don't let its shiny exterior and newly refurbished interior fool you. This is a plane that's been around the block a few times — and it's nearly 80 years old. It's a stunning, newly refurbished 1937 Lockheed 10A Electra, much like the Electra 10E flown by Amelia Earhart in her ill-fated, around-the-world expedition in July of that same year. The plane is one of the last of its kind still flying in the world, and it arrived with two pilots and a mechanic at the Canadian Warplane Heritage museum for some maintenance work.

STARS responding to more calls
Winnipeg Sun
Manitoba's air ambulance is flying to emergency scenes far more often over the past few months, thanks to new response rules. The Winnipeg base of the Shock Trauma Air Rescue Society saw its number of takeoffs soar after criteria triggering its automatic dispatch broadened to cover more vehicle collisions and medical calls. Previously, the chopper would only be sent out immediately if a patient was trapped in a vehicle or already unconscious, not just at risk of critical injury, according to STARS.

Frugal pilots KISS: Keep it safe and simple
General Aviation News
It is great to be a part of the general aviation community where pilots share their ideas to help each other with knowledge and kindness. I especially like to see the many helpful frugal tips offered online from readers of my column. They add their own proven experiences that helped them fly more while spending less. For example, many readers have responded with information on their own tax laws after last month's tip on Reducing Taxes.

Pilot takes off from belly of plane without landing gear
Inside Edition
Eighty-five-year-old pilot Chris Georgaklis pulled off a breathtaking feat when things didn't go as planned during a landing. Georgaklis was coming in for a landing in Fort Pierce, Florida, in his small plane with his dog, Buddy, when he realized he was coming in too fast. He quickly raised the landing gear as the plane descended and began skidding down the runway. He explained, "I lifted them right up, but it also caused the plane to drop quite a bit, so I'd say the plane dropped maybe six to eight feet."

WW2 National Capital Flyover
Air & Space Magazine
This year marks the 70th anniversary of the end of the war that changed the United States forever. To honor the 16 million who served in the U.S. armed forces during World War 2 and to spotlight the essential role that aircraft played in U.S. victory, the General Aviation Manufacturers Association has led an effort to bring one of the largest privately owned collections of WW2 airplanes ever assembled to Washington, D.C., to fly over the National Mall on May 8, the 70th anniversary of VE Day.
