Cessna survives midair collision with geese
From Jan. 16: It was a terrifying plane ride for two Illinois men after a goose strikes their small plane after takeoff, and the entire incident was captured on video. It was just a small bird weighing no more than a couple pounds, but Keith Baird says he considers himself lucky to have survived after the goose collided with his plane a couple days after Christmas.

From April 3: The Malaysia Airlines mystery over the Indian Ocean has famous pilot Jeff Skiles drawing comparisons to the miracle on New York's Hudson River in 2009. 150 percent increase in tax on avgas — A crushing blow to GA
By Kevin Psutka, president and CEO
From May 8: At a time when the fuel price for aviation gasoline is at an all-time high and 30 to 40 percent higher than automotive gasoline, the Ontario government — without consultation with COPA or anyone else who uses this fuel — unilaterally decided to punish this important sector of aviation with a 150 percent increase in taxes. This is simply unfair.

Government of Canada
From Feb. 13: The Honourable Lisa Raitt announced amendments to the Canadian Aviation Regulations, which will set the groundwork for the introduction of the Multi-crew Pilot Licence, extend the validity period of medical certificates associated with certain pilot licences and modify the requirements regarding credits of copilot flight time. Industry groups — including training organizations, pilot associations, unions and operator associations — have widely supported these regulatory amendments, which bring Canada in line with international standards.

COPA responds to biased CBC report on ELTs
By Kevin Psutka, COPA president and CEO
From April 3: Members are reacting to a CBC report by Evan Solomon on what he perceives is a need for mandating 406 ELTs. The article is biased in the extreme and does not present all of the facts. Solomon was provided with the facts and background to this issue from COPA's perspective, including our advocacy for alternatives and for provisions to soften the financial burden of implementing mandatory requirements, such as elimination of the wasteful and unsafe requirement of sending the new ELTs out for recertification annually but Solomon chose not to report these COPA-recommended solutions to the problem.

Controlling and preventing corrosion in aircraft
By Heather Rhoades
From April 17: Similar to any other metal objects, aircraft are prone to corrosion. In only a few years, this problem can render a plane "unairworthy." As a general preventive measure, therefore, corrosion inhibitors are often applied on the surfaces of the metals used in building aircraft before assembly. Such actions notwithstanding, nature takes effect at some point. The rate at which the corrosion develops is highly dependent on the environment in which the plane is used, and how it is stored.
