On April 21-29, "Picture Yourself in a National Park" as the National Park Service and the National Park Foundation present National Park Week 2012. With nearly 400 national parks — and FREE admission all week long — there are thousands of ways to enjoy this highly anticipated annual event. Parcel tax increase proposed for Petaluma parks and recreation

A group of Petalumans has launched an effort to place a parcel tax on the November ballot that would pay for improvements to city recreational facilities, from walking trails to the community pool to athletic fields at local parks. The ballot initiative would create a $52 annual parcel tax for 15 years, which organizers say will raise $12 million over that time.

Cuts loom for San Joaquin County parks

Coming off an Easter weekend that filled up the largest county-run parks with fun seekers enjoying warm spring weather, San Joaquin County officials took a second look at a dwindling pot of money that has helped shield the county's parks budget during lean times. The Board of Supervisors voted unanimously to continue drawing from the largest of the parks trust funds that have been shoring up the budget for a network of community and regional parks across the county.

A gorgeous, little-known spot in Northern California was defiled recently when a vandal spray-painted a boulder with what appears to be a gang insignia. A check of the area then revealed that a half-dozen boulders nearby also had been tagged with older insignias in red.

Menlo Park council approves Beechwood land sale, new fees and SEIU contract

In just over an hour, the Menlo Park City Council unanimously signaled its intention to sell a city lot to a private school, raised service fees and approved a new contract for the bulk of city employees. The resolution plans the sell of 2.79 acres to the nonprofit foundation that runs Beechwood School in the Belle Haven neighborhood. City officials and Beechwood representatives negotiated a $1.26 million sales price for the school-used property adjacent to the railroad tracks between the Onetta Harris Community Center and a Menlo Park Fire Protection District station.

The conservancy, endowed 40 years ago, handles a million visitors a year while protecting animals and plants and bringing back from the brink of extinction a unique island fox.

Cities around the world are revitalizing urban waters. President Barack Obama has designated the greening of the Los Angeles River as one of the top 101 priorities across the nation for his America's Great Outdoors Initiative, out of only two per state. The Department of Interior has also named the river one of seven urban waters priorities across the nation.

Brawley awarded $2.7 million in state funds to renovate park

Alyce Gereaux Park near Oakley Elementary School is slated to get a makeover after Brawley was awarded an allotment of $2.7 million in state funds, City Manager Rosanna Bayon Moore announced. The grant from the California Department of Parks and Recreation requires no matching funds from the city and represents the second time a multimillion-dollar investment in Brawley is taking shape following the development of Fire Station No. 2, Moore said.

Oakdale awarded grant for new park

The city has been awarded $4.38 million to build a nearly 3-acre park featuring a skate park, outdoor performing arts center, children's play area and other amenities. The California Department of Parks and Recreation awarded Oakdale the funding, part of $184 million in grants the department awarded statewide to build 53 parks and upgrade 11 others. The award was announced at a recent City Council meeting.
