"Say cheese!" In honor of July being Parks and Recreation month, the City of Moreno Valley is sponsoring a "Parks Make Life Better" photo contest. Residents are encouraged to participate by submitting a photo and testimonial of an individual or family and/or friends enjoying a favorite City of Moreno Valley park, program or facility (skate park, Cottonwood Golf Course, community center, senior center).

Swinging times in Manhattan Beach
The Manhattan Beach Open Tennis tournament celebrates its 49th year with competition in open and amateur divisions being held at three locations. Run by the City of Manhattan Beach Parks and Recreation Department, the tournament is open to players ages 16 and over and will be played at Live Oak Park and the Mira Costa High School tennis courts.

Dana Point's Kevin Evans helped make the 'Whale Capital of the West' the destination for fun
Kevin Evans is known for his "Can Do" attitude and for taking a modest local recreation program in the beach town of Dana Point to one that draws visitors from across the county. The popularity of events he helped steer to draw thousands of visitors — such as the 4th of July fireworks spectacular in Dana Point Harbor, the Christmas boat parade and multiple outdoor concerts — speak volumes about Evans' leadership.

On April 30, Tom Allard, a member of the city of Manhattan Beach’s Parks and Recreation Commission and 45-year-resident of the city, passed away at the age of 70. Allard died of acute respiratory distress syndrome, according to his wife Sue Allard. After retiring from owning his used bookstore, Eclectic Collector, in Hermosa Beach almost a decade ago, he devoted himself to getting seniors involved with recreational activities, including ping pong, horseshoes and petanque.

The City of Santa Barbara Parks and Recreation Department announced that it has installed new playground equipment at Bohnett Park, which is available for public use. The new playground at Bohnett Park serves the same age group as the old playground: five-year-olds to 12-year-olds. The new equipment does include a bay of bucket swings for two- to five-year-olds, so younger children can join in the fun.

The 2016 edition of City Park Facts presents the most data to date. New this year is a comparison of the number of individual parks in a city as well as the percentage of residents within a half-mile (10-minute walk) of a park for 75 cities. This metric is generated by its ParkScore analysis, which evaluates how large cities are meeting the need for parks and recreation.

The Dr Pepper Snapple/Keep America Beautiful Park Recycling Infrastructure Grant program is designed to build or expand recycling opportunities in different park settings such as urban parks, neighborhood parks with playgrounds, athletic fields, regional and state parks, public beaches and developed public water front areas such as board walks.

Parks and Trails Health Impact Assessment Toolkit
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the National Park Service (NPS) have created a new tool to assist communities. The Parks, Trails, and Health Workbook: A Tool for Planners, Parks and Recreational Professionals, and Health Practitioners is a quick guide for incorporating public health considerations in the development and improvement of a park or trail. This tool can help start collaborative discussions about the health benefits of parks and trails and prepare for a health impact assessment (HIA).

Help CPRS Qualify Trainings for CEUs — Reviewers Needed
Continuing Education session proposals are reviewed by the CEU Team throughout the year for statewide trainings. A rating sheet is used to guide reviewers through the qualification process to determine whether minimum criteria are met. Three volunteer reviewers are used to approve each application submitted.
If you are CPRP, CPRE, CTRS, RTC certified and able to review about eight applications a year, please email Leslie Fritz (leslie@cprs.org). We typically need your rating sheet within seven working days upon receipt. For more information click here. Thank you for considering this request.
