I am wondering if anyone has experience developing a Project Based Learning Program for teens in an after-school setting. We currently have a drop-in format but are seeing that the teens do not seem engaged in our program and are getting into trouble elsewhere. I see a lot of nonprofit organizations that use project based learning in their programs but I am wondering if anyone has implemented them in a public agency like a city or special district. Thanks!

Daily Herald
When SEASPAR Executive Director Susan Friend looks at the area and out the windows of the new dedicated space the special recreation organization has at Illinois' Lisle Park District Recreation Center, she throws her arms out wide and smiles. "Wow," she says as much for herself as for others to hear. "We needed more space to continue to meet the communities' needs, and Lisle stepped up," Friend said.

Newport Beach lifeguard killed in the line of duty
City of Newport Beach
The Newport Beach Fire Department announces the on-duty death of 32-year-old Ben Carlson, a 15-year veteran of Newport Beach Lifeguard. On July 6, a Newport Beach rescue boat identified a swimmer in distress in the 6- to 8-foot surf. Ben entered the water to rescue the swimmer. After he successfully made contact with the man, both of them were hit by a large wave. The other lifeguard personnel at the scene attempted to rescue and assist Ben, but — due to the turbulent water conditions — they were unable to do so.
Ohio mayor orders health survey of Saunders Park neighbors
The Columbus Dispatch
Columbus, Ohio, Mayor Michael B. Coleman has directed Columbus Public Health to survey residents living near Saunders Park to determine whether industrial contaminants found at the city park have affected their health. Coleman said he is disappointed with Recreation and Parks officials after reading that they knew as early as 2011 that high levels of arsenic, lead and other toxic pollutants were discovered in soil samples from the Near East Side park, yet officials continued to let youth soccer teams play there.
