Extended park hours give hope to Tampa residents, police
The Tampa Tribune
Tampa, Florida's Desoto Park is one of nine parks that will be open late this summer as part of city officials' ongoing battle against a surge in violence this year. The city began extending the parks' hours last month, after Mayor Bob Buckhorn announced the city also would be expanding its summer program offerings, and completed the phase-in of the new hours at all nine of them.

Florida city will allow drones to fly over its parks

Boynton Beach, Florida residents are free to fly their model helicopters, planes and drones around and over the city. Boynton Beach city officials recently considered banning flying model aircraft and drones over city parks and property, but backlash from the city's budding techie community led to a change of heart.

'Obstacle-heavy' race coming to Illinois city

Cancer society: More sun-safe outdoor spaces vital

Municipalities and employers need to create more sun-safe outdoor spaces, says the Prince Edward Island division of the Canadian Cancer Society. While the group says people seem to be more aware about the dangers of the sun, the province's skin cancer rates are still higher than the national average.

Managers' perceptions of entry-level job competencies when making hiring decisions for municipal recreation agencies
Long Beach State faculty in conjunction with CPRS surveyed personnel with hiring responsibilities. The outcome was published in the journal of Park and Recreation Administration in March 2015. Identifying and understanding competencies related to employment in municipal parks and recreation agencies can help guide managers' hiring and employment decisions. Read the abstract here.
