The San Diego Union-Tribune
After years of planning, the city of San Diego is moving ahead with an $8 million overhaul of Children’s Park that, if successful, will attract regular use by families, nearby workers and downtown residents — as opposed to serving as a hangout for homeless persons.
The renovation effort, which is expected to be finished in the summer of 2021, will keep the current Civic Pond adjacent to West Harbor Drive, but replace the urban forest area with a number of family-friendly amenities intended to activate the entire space.

City dwellers tend to live longer if they are in leafy neighborhoods, according to a study published recently that linked green areas to lower rates of premature death. Trees in cities are already credited with cooling and cleaning the air and absorbing planet-warming gases, now researchers at the Barcelona Institute for Global Health have found they also keep death at bay.

AB5 Clean Up Legislation – Your Help is Needed
California Assembly Bill 5 (AB5), popularly known as the “gig worker bill,” is a piece of legislation signed into law by Governor Gavin Newsom in September 2019. Scheduled to go into effect on Jan. 1, 2020, it will require companies that hire independent contractors to reclassify them as employees, with a few exceptions. The bill expands on a ruling made in a case that reached the California Supreme Court in 2018, Dynamex Operations West, Inc. vs. Superior Court of Los Angeles.
At this time, it is unclear how this bill will affect public park and recreation agencies.
The bill's author, Assemblywoman Lorena Gonzalez (D-San Diego), has expressed an interest in 'clean up legislation' to provide more exceptions. Ms. Gonzalez’ office has already fielded some concerns expressed by park and recreation agencies. What we need from each of you is a list of the types of contractors (Fitness Instructors, Art Instructors, et al) that might be impacted and how exactly the ABC test applies or does not in these instances.
In short we might be able to provide greater clarity through new legislation but we need to make a clear and compelling case as this author will be reluctant to allow for AB 5 exceptions without justification.
