Honolulu stands by choice of rail contractor

Honolulu upheld its decision to keep Italian-based rail car maker Ansaldo Honolulu as the main contractor to design, build, operate and maintain the rail cars for the $5.3 billion system. Bombardier Transportation, which had submitted the lowest bid, said it is planning to file an appeal with the state Department of Commerce and Consumer Affairs. More

$825 million allocated to create jobs and improve transportation

The California Transportation Commission recently allocated $825 million in new funding to 92 highway, transit, and rail projects that will strengthen California's economy and upgrade the state's vast transportation system. The allocations included nearly $9 million from Proposition 1B, a 2006 voter-approved transportation bond. To date, the state has allocated nearly $8 billion in Proposition 1B funds. More

Native animal statues occupy I-15 in Las Vegas

Drivers will notice something unusual the next time they pass by I-15 near Blue Diamond in Las Vegas. Two large statues of Nevada's native bighorn sheep are now part of the landscape. The artwork is part of the I-15 Design-Build South Project. Besides the sheep the area is landscaped with native plants including yucca, acacia, and Joshua trees some of which are 200 years old. Design-build growing, study finds

A new study analyzing the design-build project delivery method in the United States shows it was used, on average, in more than 40 percent of non-residential construction projects in 2010. The study, which was commissioned by the Design-Build Institute of America and conducted by RSMeans Reed Construction Data Market Intelligence, shows slightly more than 40 percent of market share for design-build, with a 10 percent increase in the use of the delivery method since 2005. Texas seeks partnership to build Grand Parkway

The Texas Department of Transportation has issued Requests for Information to explore using a public-private partnership process to develop the Grand Parkway. Subject to a moratorium since 2009, the PPP process, also known as comprehensive development agreements, is re-authorized by SB 1420, which was approved by the state Legislature. More
