Employers are facing a conundrum. Should they stop testing applicants for marijuana use now that more states have legalized it for medicinal or recreational purposes and popular acceptance of the substance has spread?
Twenty-eight states and the District of Columbia have legalized medical marijuana. Eight of those states (Alaska, California, Colorado, Maine, Massachusetts, Nevada, Oregon, Washington) and the District of Columbia have also legalized marijuana for recreational use.
But the drug remains illegal under federal law, and employers have the right to test for it, even in states where the substance is legal. Not only does federal law conflict with some states' laws, but state laws also vary, sometimes significantly, challenging multistate employers.

A new meta-analysis involving dozens of international researchers suggests that an influential 2003 study on the interaction of genes, environment, and depression may have missed the mark.
For years, scientists have been trying to determine what effect a gene linked to the brain chemical serotonin may have on depression in people exposed to stress. A set of bills introduced in the U.S. Senate and House recently would drastically reform the way marijuana is regulated at the federal level and allow state-legal marijuana programs to move forward without federal intervention.
Introduced by Sen. Ron Wyden (D-Ore.) and Rep. Earl Blumenauer (D-Ore.), the legislative package would remove marijuana from the Controlled Substance Act's list of most dangerous drugs and set up a federal framework for regulating it. Doing so, the lawmakers say, would close the gap between federal and state-level marijuana policy, keep people out of jail for minor drug offenses and allow marijuana businesses to thrive.

Office Genie surveyed 2,000 U.K. office workers and asked them about factors affecting their happiness in the workplace. While the average level of workplace happiness for British employees sits at 3.63/5, they find some serious causes for concern.
Junior staff are the least happy in the workforce: they rank at 3.40 on the happiness scale — comparatively, business owners rank at 4.20 — a significant 25 percent higher.
Of further concern was the fact employees with mental health issues feel unsupported in the workplace: More than half (51 percent) believe their place of work offers inadequate levels of support.
