House energy panel to begin heavy lift on Trump's infrastructure plan
The House energy committee next week will begin the heavy lifting in considering a number of changes to energy and environment law needed to get President Trump's infrastructure agenda off the ground. The Energy and Commerce Committee is holding two hearings mid-week that will tackle potentially controversial issues, such as adjusting the Clean Air Act, from which a large chunk of the Environmental Protection Agency's authority stems.
FERC lifts restrictions in federal, state demand response markets
The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission issued an order recently, lifting restrictions on demand response resources participating in both state and federal programs, freeing up more resources to help manage the grid during times of high demand. The commission's decision is the result of a complaint filed by the Natural Resources Defense Council and a coalition led by the New York Public Service Commission.
Almost 90 percent of new power in Europe from renewable sources in 2016
Renewable energy sources made up nearly nine-tenths of new power added to Europe’s electricity grids last year, in a sign of the continent’s rapid shift away from fossil fuels.
FERC: US saw spike in natural gas capacity additions last year
An infrastructure update issued by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission showed more than 100 new or expanded gas-fired units were brought online last year, adding about 8,700 MW of new capacity. That's a significant bump over 2015 figures, which had about 75 new or expanded units adding 6,400 MW.

Without a Quorum, How Will FERC Operate? Senior FERC Staff Answer Your Questions, February 22
With the resignation of Chairman Norman Bay on February 3, the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) currently has two sitting commissioners and is absent of the needed three commissioners necessary to operate with a quorum. In the absence of a quorum, how will FERC continue to regulate interstate transmission of electricity, natural gas, and oil and review proposals? On Wednesday, February 22, from 10am to 11am, FERC General Counsel David Morenoff and colleagues from the Office of the General Counsel will hold a teleconference open exclusively to Energy Bar Association members to discuss and answer questions on how the absence of a quorum affects FERCs operations, what delegated authority FERCs staff has to act during the lack of quorum and what this means for cases before FERC.
