Bills dealing with consumer choice and healthcare competition are now on sitting on the desk of Gov. Ron DeSantis to sign. One of those healthcare bills is HB 843, which encompasses provisions that would undo burdensome regulations which for years have added rising costs to healthcare. The bill addresses a number of different policies but they all have a common theme of providing more options when it comes to choice. HB 843 also deals with physician shortages which has been a problem in the Sunshine State. The Florida Department of Health's own annual report note, if not addressed, this problem will only get worse.

Challenging the conventional wisdom that out-of-hospital cardiac arrest occurs without warning, new data show that more than 1 in 4 patients experiencing arrest have actually been previously assessed in an emergency room within the 90 days before their event. What's more, many visited their primary care physician in the months leading up to the cardiac arrest, the researchers note. "Sudden cardiac death is not [always] so sudden," lead study author Mony Shuvy, MD (Hadassah-Hebrew University Medical Center, Jerusalem, Israel), told TCTMD. "There are symptoms, and in order to prevent this awful event we need to characterize the patients that come to our hospital emergency [departments], go to family physicians, and try to understand that the symptoms they are coming with might be signs of an event that is going to occur."

In rural America, patients are often hundreds of miles from the care they need. Community hospitals, with low volumes and limited budgets, usually don't have specialists like neonatologists, neurologists and cardiologists on staff. And even when they do, there are often too few to ensure constant coverage. Telehealth transforms those situations to everyone's benefit.

Emergency department clinicians typically treat status epilepticus with benzodiazepines, followed as necessary with phenytoin, but this approach often leads to intubation and ventilation. Now, the results of a study from researchers in New Zealand and Australia suggest there is a better way to treat severe epileptic seizures in children, and the results of the study will likely change how ED doctors around the world manage status epilepticus in pediatric patients.

What do new doctors and blue chip athletes have in common? Both are in high demand and are being heavily recruited, according to a Merritt Hawkins survey. Forty-five percent of new doctors received 100 or more job solicitations during their training, and two-thirds (66%) of new doctors said they received 51 or more job solicitations. That's not surprising given the fact that an Association of American Medical Colleges report released recently projected a shortage of approximately 122,000 physicians by 2032, including a shortage of 55,000 primary care physicians and approximately 66,000 too few specialists.

Despite evidence that helmets are critical to preventing head injuries, not all children wear them while biking, skateboarding and riding scooters, a new national poll finds. Eighteen percent of parents say their child never wears a helmet on a bike ride, and even more say their kids skip helmets on a skateboard (58%) and scooter (61%), suggests the C.S. Mott Children's Hospital National Poll on Children's Health at the University of Michigan.

Healing patients is why doctors choose to practice medicine. Dissatisfaction is sounding alarms as physicians leave the field at alarming rates. At the most recent Health Information and Management Systems Society's annual conference, technology was front and center of industry efforts to improve health care. Nuance Communications' focus on how conversational AI and ambient clinical intelligence are particularly promising, and Forbes' Ben Kerschberg had the opportunity to speak at length with Nuance CEO Mark Benjamin about how technology may help cure physician burnout.

Research on the effectiveness of animal-assisted interventions in hospital settings has produced mixed results. Published studies have found that interactions with therapy dogs reduce the need for pain medication in surgery patients, decrease depression in individuals undergoing chemotherapy, and ameliorate anxiety in women hospitalized for high-risk pregnancies. Other studies, however, have been less encouraging.

Children who ingested small, coin-shaped batteries, used to power watches or hearing aids, still experienced gastric injury even if they were asymptomatic, researchers said recently at the annual Digestive Disease Week. Of 68 endoscopic removals for button battery ingestion, 60% showed evidence of mucosal damage, including erosion, ulcerations, some cases of necrosis, and one case of gastric perforation, reported Racha Khalaf, MD, of the Children's Hospital Colorado in St. Petersburg, Florida, and colleagues. Mucosal injury was not associated with the presentation of symptoms, or the duration of the battery retention, suggesting that even patients who present without symptoms could be at risk, and that prompt removal of the foreign body may be necessary.

Out of the four generations in today's workforce, the millennial generation is the largest. They're also the future of healthcare. Although the delayed retirement of older nurses has provided a buffer against low retention rates among new nurses, it's only a matter of time before this buffer wanes. It's time to tailor our work environments to meet their needs. Is your organization ready to attract and retain new nurse grads from the millennial generation? We can start by understanding what they want.
