Accidents 40 percent of ER gun injuries
Health News Florida
Across the state, 4 out of 10 people who come to hospital emergency rooms with nonfatal gunshot wounds were shot by accident, according to the Orlando Sentinel. The rate is even higher in Orange County, with accidents accounting for more than half of firearm-related ER visits.
One-third of ED patients given vancomycin returned by 3 months for the same infection
ACEP News
"One-and-done" vancomycin dosing probably isn’t that uncommon in emergency departments. At least, it wasn't from December 2008 to June 2010 at the Barnes-Jewish Hospital emergency department in St. Louis, an academic ED that annually serves almost 100,000 patients. Of 526 ED patients who got vancomycin, mostly for cellulitis and abscesses, 68 percent got one dose, 27 percent got two doses, and 5 percent got three. Weight-based doses were correct in 24 percent of patients; they were too low in 73 percent, and too high in 3 percent. Less than half of the patients were sent home on an oral antibiotic, and about one-third were back in the ED within three months for the same infection.
Florida leads enrollment on Healthcare.gov
Health News Florida
More Floridians are signing up for the new federal health insurance program than residents in any other state, with nearly 18,000 registering over the last two months. According to figures released Wednesday, nearly 14,500 Floridians signed up under the Affordable Care Act in November. That compares to about 11,000 in Texas.
Major change in CPR training
WFLX-TV
There may be a new approach to saving a life by eliminating the 'mouth-to-mouth' portion of CPR. A study by the American Heart Association says the change may make cardiopulmonary resuscitation more effective during cardiac arrest. 'Hands-only' techniques are being taught to the general public across South Florida.

The ER doctor in your living room
By Maria Frisch
Virtual emergency rooms benefit hospital-based locations by screening and treating low-urgency and common medical problems. This frees up both staff time and resources to focus on high-urgency, major medical concerns. Thus, no patients go without the level of care they require. For this reason, some local ERs have started to offer their own virtual service. Are virtual ERs the solution to common problems that have plagued ERs for decades? Time will tell.
Text messaging in emergency medicine
By Dorothy L. Tengler
Interacting with friends and family, our lives are shaped by text messaging in many ways. And those ways are increasing, especially for patients with diabetes. A recent study was conducted for Type 2 diabetes patients in the emergency department of the largest safety-net hospital of the public care system in Los Angeles County. The research examined how a daily text messaging program for patients affected the rate of return to the ED and overall health.
Food for thought: Got goals?
By Karen Childress
Each new year brings with it the opportunity for a fresh start, a clean slate, and giving thought to what might unfold over the next 12 months. Whether you're setting goals for your business or yourself, it's important to have a plan. There is a well-worn but still useful acronym — SMART — that's designed to help with setting goals. The following is a quick recap of SMART, followed by three additional ideas to consider when setting goals for 2014.
