Here are a few highlights of Forest Service accomplishments during 2017, derived from and inspired by the U.S. Department of Agriculture's strategic goals.

FPS
The Forest Products Society (FPS) has issued a call for papers for its 72nd International Convention (IC), June 11-14 at Monona Terrace in Madison, Wisconsin. The annual IC is the premier event for forest products industry leaders, researchers and students, offering a world-class platform to share research, discoveries and scientific advances. The 2018 theme is "Forest Products — Key to a Sustainable Future." The deadline for speaker abstracts is Friday, Jan. 5.
Prospective speakers are invited to submit abstracts for oral presentations or posters covering recent innovations, achievements or professional challenges in forest products. Students in wood science or renewable bioproducts are strongly encouraged to participate as there will be a poster competition, scholarship opportunities and student networking events planned. Poster presenters will be given brief speaking opportunities.

A new Colorado State University-led study unearthed unhappy news for the resilience of Rocky Mountain forests. The study examined nearly 1,500 sites in five states — Colorado, Wyoming, Washington, Idaho and Montana — and found a link between Earth's changing climate and significant decreases in post-fire tree regeneration, according to a Colorado State University press release. Regeneration is an important factor for forest health.

The Fourmile Canyon Fire, sparked by a backyard burn west of Boulder, Colorado, in 2010, caused $220 million in damage and destroyed 168 homes. It also scorched nearly a quarter of a watershed that supplies water to the nearby community of Pine Brook Hills. The problems didn't end there: Long after the blaze was put out, intense rainstorms periodically washed sediment and other particles downstream, disrupting water treatment and forcing the local water district to stop pulling water from Fourmile Creek, leaving it reliant upon water already collected in its reservoir.
